TNs: Two 2007 CDRs

Picked up a couple CDR Villages in my travels yesterday. Had a mini-tasting with a dinner of roast chicken and potato leak soup.

2007 Perrin & Fils Côtes du Rhône Villages: Under $10 at the local Costco. 50/50 Syrah-Grenache blend. Dark ruby in the glass, rather slight nose that did not open up over time, nice palate of subtle red fruit and clay with a touch of bitterness on the finish. Was much better with food where the bitterness was less notable and the palate seemed more expressive. Will see how it does on day 2 tonight.

2007 Louis Bernard Côtes du Rhône Villages: 75 Grenache, 25 Syrah and it showed. Purple in the glass with a pronounced dark fruited nose and a thick, soft palate of rich fruit to match. Quite sumptuous, if one dimensional, but enjoyable overall.

For the price, both of these wines were fine though I would give the edge to the Perrin at this point. A bit more complexity with food.

I would have expected a bit better of a showing, even at the low end like these two wines, given the relative ‘glory’ of the vintage (particularly for CdP).

Perrin VV’s are quite consistent QPR’s however, and particularly so with food.

Didn’t mean to imply that I was disappointed with these wines. They were satisfactory in that price range.

On night 2 the Perrin was indeed improved.

The CDR are very good for the money… St. Cosme Les Deux is my fav so far but… OMG!! CDP is where you want to put your money. I just had the 07 basic Janasse CDP tonight and wow, a young wine firing on all cylinders. Buy, buy, buy.

Bob, is that you?

I too found the 07 Perrin CdR-Villages a good value at $9.59. It was selling previously at K&L for $11.

I need to try the Perrin CdR Villages after all the good talk on it. The basic 2007 CdR, called “Reserve”, is a nice wine for 8 bucks.

BTW Dan, I’m Bob… Here are my 3 dots to prove it … neener

He uses 4 dots sometimes…

And when he is really happy, 5 dots…
