Spend a great new year’s eve with my wife and a good friend. We decided to cook at our place and made an agreeable dinner with seafood snacks, pasta with prawns and scallops and Beef Wellington as the main course. All in all a great night with a Voerzio Brunate 2004 that performed extremely well and the three other wines were also quite nice.
We started with Selosse Initial NV (deg 7th of September 2010). Round, rich and as usual a good wine. I had hoped for a bit more freshness and minerality. Also it was a bit sweeter than I remember from previous tastings. Had the last glass tonight and then wine seemed more in balance tonight than on new year’s.
With the seafood pasta we had the Comtes Lafon Clos de la Barre 2007. A little less “Meursault” than expected. Great mouthfeel and good energy. Green apples, lime and elderflower. Quite good energy.
For the Wellington we went with Nebbiolo and decided on a Giacosa Santo Stefano 2005 and a Voerzio Brunate 2004. Two good/great wines but as expected also two very different wines. We had them side by side.
The Giacosa was a real treat indeed. Classic stuff and quite Burgundian both on the nose and palate. Bright red currants and tobacco. A bit dry in the mouth and less exciting than the aromas.
The Brunate was all over the place. Notning short of an amazing wines. A have been quite sceptical towards modern style Barolo and Voerzio but this was just a wonderful wine. The nose was simple to die for. Campher and ripe dark berries. Sweet tobacco and a hint of tar. Ripe and fullbodied on the palate with tannins beginning to soften. A big wine but without lossing focus.
Hope you all had a great New Year’s and wish you a great 2014.
