ROY’S WITH EWG - Roy’s, Pasadena, CA (7/19/2009)
We descended on Roy’s upon David Lewin’s urging we raid the prix fixe menu. For $35 you get several choices across three courses which I found it to be quite the value. The Kobe meatloaf with shittake mushroom sauce was yummy. No wine theme was selected and we ended up with a very eclectic lineup. My favorite wine being the '79 Auslese.

N.V. H. Billiot Champagne Brut Reserve Grand Cru - France, Champagne, Ambonnay, Champagne
Nose of lot’s of red berries and cherries with some sourdough toast. Big Champagne palate that I love with good balance and plenty of cherries. Better with air and lack of chill. -
2006 Copain Roussanne James Berry Vineyard - USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles
Clean and light. Almost like a white Burg this evening I didn’t get a ton of usual Roussanne notes. Nicely balanced. -
1995 Trimbach Pinot Gris Réserve Personnelle - France, Alsace, Alsace AOC
Nose of apple juice, stone fruits and rain water. Clean and nicely balanced feel but lacks something and shows some age. -
1979 Karthäuserhof Eitelsbacher Karthäuserhofberg Kronenberg Riesling Auslese #28 - Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
Slight diesel among sweet tart stone fruit and golden apples. Silky sweet balance with some flavors of apple juice. Lovely palate feel and subtle flavors. My favorite on the night. -
2006 Copain Pinot Noir Cerise Vineyard - USA, California, North Coast, Anderson Valley
Leads with a bit of funk. Fleshy feeling for a Copain Pinot. Plenty of fruit and on the backwards side now. -
2006 Copain Pinot Noir Monument Tree - USA, California, North Coast, Anderson Valley
Woody yet tight nose. Nicely balanced and on the lean side. Tastes like plain Pinot though lacking interest. -
2001 Ridge Zinfandel Dusi Ranch - USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles
Sweet chocolate nose like a ripe modern Cab with some dill notes popping up later on. Balanced with good acids but only vaguely tasting like Zinfandel. -
2004 Domaine de la Vieille Julienne Châteauneuf-du-Pape - France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Big juicy ripe nose reminiscent of a Zinfandel. Good acids and a bit of pepper. Linear palate though full feeling fruit. -
2004 Bennett Lane Primus Reserve - USA, California, Napa Valley
Bit weedy but nice Cab S nose with some sweet oak. Bit of a bite on the back end. Pretty not classically Cab flavored. -
2004 Copain Syrah Eaglepoint Ranch - USA, California, North Coast, Mendocino County
Sweet vanilla and lava rocks. Woody, full fruited but not feeling concentrated to get better. -
2005 Kistler Chardonnay Durell Vineyard - USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast
Smoky nose with a bit of sulfur smelling like a young white Burg. On the leanish side and nicely balanced. Far from the expected fruit bomb. A change in style for Kistler? -
N.V. Jonata Winery La Miel de Jonata - USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Ynez Valley
Heavy sweet nose of honey and baked apricots. Weighty but not heavy with plenty of sugar though doesn’t seem like too much. Sauternes like nose, Loire like palate.
