2006 Scherrer Winery Pinot Noir Sonoma County - USA, California, Sonoma County (7/12/2009)
14.5% alcohol. This is such a juicy and delicious Pinot. Scherrer makes elegant, balanced, pure Pinots that are just pure delight to the palate. Fragrant bouquet of red and black cherry, with minerals nad baking spice and a touch of flowers. In the mouth, just plain juicy. Bursting with cherry fruit, a kick of acidity, excellent complexity, and a long finish. Beautifully done and eminently drinkable. A- -
2006 Siduri Pinot Noir Russian River Valley - USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley (7/11/2009)
14.3% alcohol. This is drinking beautifully right now. Bright nose of red and black cherry, baking spice, and a slight hint of mineral-laden funk. In the mouth, slightly sweet and really delicious. This is all about juicy fruit up front, but then it gets down with some spice and strong acidity. Long finish. Lovely, early drinking Pinot. A- -
2007 Carlisle Zinfandel Sonoma County - USA, California, Sonoma County (7/8/2009)
14.9% alcohol. Sealed under screw cap. The difference between the cork and screw cap abated in this comparison. The two bottles were essentially identical. Perhaps there was a touch more of the creamy blueberry in this one. But they are drinking very closely right now, and that is to say wonderfully. A- -
2006 Linne Calodo Outsider - USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles (7/7/2009)
15.8% alcohol. 75% Zinfandel, 21% Syrah, 4% Mourvedre. Very spicy wine that carries its alcohol very well. Black fruited nose is generously endowed with spicy notes, with the Syrah playing a key aspect in the aromatics. In the mouth, less plush than you might have expected. At the lighter end of the black fruit spectrum. Good acidity. Strong finish. No heat to speak out. The spiciness plays all the way through. A- -
2007 Carlisle Zinfandel Sonoma County - USA, California, Sonoma County (7/7/2009)
14.9% alcohol. Sealed under cork. Big, luscious, and viscous, without being overripe or jammy. An awesome, briary nose of big fruit, with a hint of creaminess. In the mouth, black and blue fruits dominate, racing across the palate to a bright burst of acidity and gushing fruit on the finish. A- -
2007 Williams Selyem Zinfandel Feeney Vineyard - USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley (7/7/2009)
14.7% alcohol. This is one of the best Zins I’ve had all year. Compelling aromatics, with bright fruit, richness, spice, and earth. In the mouth, plush and refined, with gorgeous fruit grabbing your palate and tickling it with delight. Excellent complexity and acidity. Superbly long finish. Awesome wine. A -
2006 Copain Pinot Noir Tous Ensemble - USA, California, North Coast, Anderson Valley (7/2/2009)
13.1% alcohol. The depth and darkness of the fruit profile intrigued me here, given how this wine is so light on its feet. Aromatic nose that takes a bit of time to reveal its full hand. Packed with red and black cherry fruit, flowers, minerals, and spice. In the mouth, a laser-like wine that has terrific concentration. Smooth, refined, and pure. Every sip is worth contemplating, although it’s a bit hard to do given that it’s so drinkable. Long finish. Awesome value. This wine has settled down even more in the past year and is drinking even better. A- -
2007 Williams Selyem Zinfandel Bacigalupi Vineyard - USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley (7/1/2009)
14.5% alcohol. It took a few hours for this to open up, but when it did? Wow, an awesome Zinfandel, packed with black fruit that was juicy and just this side of jammy. Spicy on the palate, with a tremendous backbone to it. Good acidity. Long finish, with no trace of heat. Terrific Zin that will benefit with a bit more time in bottle. A-
