TNs NYE: 02 Dom, 06 Schrader T6, 95 Krug

Ended the year with a nice handful of wines. With all the hype surounding the latest Dom, I had to give it a try. They were pouring this by the glass at Mina’s Bourbon Steak in Georgetown. It paired nicely with diver scallops in a white cellary and oyster purée. After much deliberation, and against Mike P’s better experience, I opted for a Schrader clone I hadn’t tried yet and pulled the T6. Wow, what a wine! It was paired with perfectly braised Waygu short ribs. Finally, after a brisk walk around town, we settled into the hot tub and polished off the Krug.
Happy New Year to all - drink well, and best wishes for health, happiness and prosperity in 2011!

  • 1995 Krug Champagne Brut - France, Champagne (1/1/2011)
Only in contrast to the 02 Dom did this seem somewhat evolved, otherwise, this was remarkably youthful and energetic. Loads of crisp citrus and stone, with a fine effervescence that clears to reveal lingering brioche and nutty notes. Very fine, engaging young wine. Loved it.

  • 2002 Moët & Chandon Champagne Cuvée Dom Pérignon - France, Champagne (1/1/2011)
Tight, crisp lines - lemon verbena oil and a flinty, tense finish. Fine, generous mousse propels citrus pith and petrol through a moderate, finish. Ends completely clean. Really nice start to a night of great wine.

  • 2006 Schrader Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon T6 Beckstoffer To-Kalon Vineyard - USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville (1/1/2011)
Most notable for it’s incredibly seductive texture. Huge, round silky mouthful of raspberry, plum and and cassis liquor. The finish goes on for days, and as the fruit recedes, subtle notes of charcoal and mineral emerge. With air, edible flowers complicate the fruit and silty tannin begins to accumulate on the palate. Remarkable purity and balance. Wow!
