BURGUNDY TASTING - Harrogate Fine Wine Company (1/30/2012)
Whites
-
2009 Château De La Saule Montagny 1er Cru - France, Burgundy, Côte Chalonnaise, Montagny 1er Cru
– tasted a single glass non-blind over 10 – 15 minutes –
NOSE: smoky – hint of sulfur, maybe? banana leaf; moderate expressive.
BODY: pale green-yellow color; medium bodied.
TASTE: medium-light intensity of flavor: lots of mineral; slightly tropical fruit; 13% alc. is well-hidden; good acidity. Not bad, but kind of boring.
-
2009 Domaine Michel Briday Rully Clos de Remenot - France, Burgundy, Côte Chalonnaise, Rully
– tasted a single glass non-blind over 10 – 15 minutes –
NOSE: white apple; faint aromas; tight.
BODY: pale yellow color of medium-light depth; medium-light bodied.
TASTE: like the Nose, it was hard to pull much off the palate: minerally; light apple-Chard. taste; 13.5% alc. well-hidden. Boring.
-
2008 Edmond Cornu & Fils Chorey-les-Beaune - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chorey-les-Beaune
– tasted a couple glasses non-blind over 10 – 15 minutes apiece, with approx. 90 min. in between –
NOSE: very expressive; tropical coconut; papaya Lifesaver candy; hint of oak.
BODY: green-yellow color of medium-light depth; medium bodied.
TASTE: rich flavored; lactic acid is intense; oaky; medium finish; ripe. This saw 15% oak, the rest stainless. 13% alc. not noticeable. I enjoyed this a lot, and consider it the surprise good wine of the tasting. Seems to be reasonably priced at about $40. Gut impression score: 89 – 90.
-
2008 Edmond Cornu & Fils Meursault - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault
– tasted a couple glasses non-blind over 10 – 15 minutes apiece, with approx. 90 min. in between –
NOSE: expressive: strong popcorn scent; dried pineapple; winery chai; not quite as attention-grabbing as the Chorey-les-Beaune in this tasting, but certainly not a waif.
BODY: maize color of medium depth; medium bodied.
TASTE: good mid-palate Chard. fruit; mineral-laden finish is long and of medium to medium-strong intensity; nice embedded acidity – bright lactic acid; at first, I thought this was very good, but, upon careful inspection, I realized I like this a bit more than “very good.” This wine saw 30% oak, the rest stainless. 13% alc. is not noticeable. Somewhat tight, so decant if drinking now. My favorite wine of the tasting, but a bit expensive at about $60. Gut impression score: 90 – 92.

2007 Georges Lignier et Fils Morey St. Denis - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Morey St. Denis
– tasted a couple glasses non-blind over 10 – 15 minutes apiece, with approx. 90 min. in between –
NOSE: expressive; perfumed cherry; red apple skin.
BODY: ruby color of light depth, with some lightening at the edges; light bodied.
TASTE: lightly flavored; tart red berries; a bit green; hint of leather/horse on finish, which is medium-short and of light intensity; good acidity; light tannin; 12.5% alc. not noticeable; objectively, not really a very impressive wine, but I did enjoy it for how plainly it spoke of “Pinot Noir” to me. I would make this a mid-week daily drinker if it could be bought for $20 - $25; as it is, however, it’s horribly overpriced at about $50. Gut impression score: low to mid 80’s.
-
1999 Bitouzet-Prieur Volnay 1er Cru Pitures - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
– tasted a couple glasses non-blind over approx. 15 minutes –
NOSE: expressive; ripe; hint of black licorice; purple-berried; somewhat muddled.
BODY: hazy ruby color of medium depth; medium bodied.
TASTE: ripe, roasted fruit flavors; hint of horsiness and maybe a slight green (or mineral?) streak; medium-fine tannin; 13.5% alc. not noticeable; I prefer this to the 2007 Lignier – Morey Saint Denis. Overpriced at a bit more than $60. Gut impression score: mid to high 80’s.
-
2009 Domaine Jean Chauvenet Vosne-Romanée - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée
– tasted a couple glasses non-blind over approx. 15 minutes –
NOSE: pickle chutney; floral – violets; red berry; some oak.
BODY: violet-garnet color of medium depth; medium-light bodied.
TASTE: red berries; mineral; fine drying tannins; oaky; not very powerful; second glass did show a bit broader on the mid-palate than the first glass, but that wasn’t enough to save this from “O.K.” status. 13% alc. Overpriced at $60. Gut impression score: mid to high 80’s.
-
2005 Georges Lignier et Fils Clos de la Roche - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru
– tasted a couple glasses non-blind over approx. 15 minutes –
NOSE: expressive; smoky rubber tires; deep and perfumy.
BODY: garnet color of medium depth; medium-light bodied.
TASTE: quite polished, but a touch austere; seems to be holding back; light raspberry and cranberry fruits; light oak; medium-long finish of moderate intensity. 13.5% alc. Easily the best red of the tasting, but overpriced at $140. I was expecting more from a CdlR, and especially an ’05. Gut impression score: low 90’s.
-
2004 Domaine Jean Chauvenet Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Bousselots - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
– tasted a single glass non-blind over 10 – 15 minutes –
NOSE: some tertiary elements creeping in; chalky spearmint; not much fruit.
BODY: garnet color of medium depth; medium bodied.
TASTE: ripe, but has the GM’s; somewhat horsey; mineral; a touch smoky, but still green. 13.5% alc… A decent ’04, I suppose, but laughably overpriced at $85. Gut impression score: low to mid 80’s.
-
2006 Jean-Claude Belland Corton-Charlemagne - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
– tasted a single glass non-blind over approx. 5 minutes –
Expressive Nose with lots of tropical green fruits. Palate was similarly expressive, showing lots of tropicals, mineral, and powder. Quite nice. Bottle had been open for a good 8 hours by the time I tasted it.
