2006 Carlisle Syrah Pelkan Ranch - USA, California, Sonoma County, Knights Valley (10/5/2009)
15.0% alcohol. Decanted for one hour before serving. This is drinking really well. Dark purple color. Exquisitely complex nose of black and blue fruit, flowers, meaty notes, spice, pepper, and forest floor. In the mouth, the balance and concentration work in perfect harmony, creating a surprisingly elegant palate for such a powerful wine. The fruit leads the charge, followed closely by the strikingly complex elements that came through on the nose. Good acidity. Deliciously long finish that has pleasingly soft tannins. This is just terrific. A- -
2006 Carlisle Zinfandel Carlisle Vineyard - USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley (10/4/2009)
15.0% alcohol. Classic, beautiful Carlisle here. Red/purple color. Nose that just jumps out of the glass and grabs you with big, briary fruit. In the mouth, that ho-hum amazing mixture of plush fruit, deep complexity, and exquisite balance that gives you no sense of just how brawny the wine is. Good acidity. Long finish. Just so delicious to drink. A-
