JAFFURS WINES

It’s been 7 years or so since I’ve been here, they’ve been around for about 30 years

2021 Jaffurs SRH Chard

Sourced from Radian and Donnachadh vineyards. Rather comely scents of sweet corn, very light ginger beer and bartlett pear. Warm and cuddly, pear leads with lemony afterbreathe. Guessed 13.5%–13.6%.

2023 Jaffurs Viognier

61% neutral oak, 7% concrete and the rest stainless. The fruit is from Bien Nacido, White Hawk and Sanford & Benedict. Yes to honey bouquet, with tangerine and tropical fruit. Light and tasty, peach cobbler and tingle of poached pear.

2022 Jaffurs Roussanne

Stolpman fruit, such a pretty light gold. Elusive bouquet seems to link with floral/honeysuckle with barest hint of papaya and maybe orange? nicely Roussanne in texture–sits pleasantly in the mouth with just twinges of slight bitter at the back to frame light tropical white and yellow fruit.

2003 Jaffurs Roussanne

A rare chance to try this library wine. Definitely doesn’t suck. The fruit here is sedate and sublime in the nose–essence of floral. Nice, nice. Lemon and honey do combine harmoniously. Dee-lish.

2021 Jaffurs Grenache

Larner and Stolpman fruit. Strawberry is there, but it’s light and airy. Almost a watermelon backbeat and faint sense of nutmeg. I don’t hate this  It’s rather demure almost a Beaujolais in presentation. There’s an attractive rooty side. Not bad at all. Elegant light version of chewiness on the tongue. Really rather amazing for 14.7% 10 months in oak, 60% whole cluster.

2022 Jaffurs SBC Syrah

Dabs of P.S. and Grenache. Plum comes first, some lightly candied cherry. Young still and very laid back. Good length, black fruit–cassis especially–and a little asphalt. Lovely shape, just leave it 2 years.

2020 Jaffurs Thompson Syrah

22 months in 38% new oak. Still putting itself together–dark, dark brooding fruit. LIttle bit of espresso. More resolved on the palate, very juicy blackberry and plum with a tiny swatch of creosote. Really composed, there is enough acid to get it to the throat. Almost-bold but reined in. Good wine.

2021 Jaffurs Upslope Syrah

22 months in 50% new. Mostly Bien Nacido fruit with Larner and Kinsey. Co-ferment with 3% viognier. All blacks bouquet–black cherry, blackberry and cassis. Mouthfilling–it is rich but blends in some chocolate, a touch of molasses and again a little asphalt—fruit replays for sure, maybe with some prune. Expressive.

Sante,

Mike

I’ve had the pleasure of consuming some older Jaffurs Syrahs lately going back to 2003. Oh have they held up. Even the appellation level efforts are still amazing. Their Verna’s vineyard offerings were some of my favorites.
