Fabio hosted several friends to test through his current wines. It’s always a treat to catch up and spend time with him. This year was another super lineup of wines.

Fresh and floral nose with red fruit, some Sweet-Tart., and a sense of minerality. Lifted, fresh, and crunchy on the palate with beautifully balanced acidity. Strawberry and a hint of peppercorns. Gulpable. Delicious.

Grassy fresh and floral nose with a good sense of minerality. Fresh an and bright not he plate with good fruit clarity and focus. Sweet tart. lovely balance. Delicious and gulpable.

Peppercorn, spice, and red fruits on the nose. Light weight, supple, and fresh on the plate, with more material than it seems, with beautiful proportion and freshness. Acid balance excellent. Softness. Very drinkable. Lovely.

A ripe, yet fresh nose. A little more grapey than usual. Supple and giving on the palate with good clarity and focus. Soft fine tannins on back end. Pretty.

Ripe red fruits and spice with a sense of calm and clarity on the nose. Sapid with great palate presence coupled with freshness and lift. Harmonious. Little touch plum to the fruit. lovely Barbera.

Surprisingly cool fruit with violets and tar. Graceful and sapid with excellent palate breadth and sense of grace especially for freisa. Fine ripe tannins on the back end with a more nebbiolo like degree of finesse.

Cool mix of red dark nebbiolo fruit, violet, mountain herb. and licorice. Midweighted-barely. It’s graceful, pure and fresh with really nice fruit, spice, inner florals and perfume. Harmonious with good length. Freshness with depth and breadth. there’s an ease and sense of calm to it. No heat. Good acid fruit spice balance. Weightlessness. Lovely.

Cool red-dark nebbiolo fruit with nice spice, violet and tar. Light to midweighted for Barolo. It’s elegant with some Ricola, ferrous, umami/porcini notes adding to the whole. Good length. Firm ripe tannins. Elegant. Lovely. Very strong showing for this wine. Quite long. 92 (92 points)

A terrific, inviting nose with balsam, both red a cool nebbiolo fruit, roses, spice, and tar. Classic. Mid plus weighted, transparent and focused with jewel like clarity. Beautiful nine mouth perfume. Harmonious. Finishes with firm ripe tannins. Outstanding. Long. Seamless. (96 points)

Deeper, cooler fruit nose with violet more than rose, soil, and balsam. There is depth and material but seemingly only mid weighted. This is structured yet graceful, supple and broad. Serious material. Finishes with firm ripe tannins and tar. Mineral water like transparency. Harmonious. Bravo. (95 points)

More forward and overt nose with roses, red fruit, some Giacosa like hard candy, balsam and tar. Mid plus weighted, solid and intense but still deft. Powerful. Expansive. Long. terrific inner mouth perfume. More powerful if less nuance than the Monvigliero. Terrific (97 points)
It’s always great to see Fabio and to see that he is still the same guy he was pre 100 pointization from Galloni. A smart, funny kind, and humble man who also happens to be a fantastic winemaker. What I love about his wines, aside from the obvious brilliant cru Baroli and his ability to make the best of a vintage regardless of its character, is that his wines from top to bottom have a sensibility. His pelvaerga is a brilliant pelaverga, his rose, his Sauv Blanc, dolcetto, barbera, whatever it is all excel at their intended goal. Some of the goals are profound wines, some are to be wines of simple pleasure. All of them speak of their place. None of them aspire to be anything more or less than what they should be, yet seem to hit the mark perfectly. That is a rare talent and I am hugely appreciative of it.
