TNs: Impromptu 06 Savigny-les-Beaune horizontal

In the mood to drink some wine that I have confidence will show well, and in the mood to try to learn something, I grabbed three Savigny that I had handy and tried to see what I could figure out. I think the results of the survey are that Dominode is great Terroir (not surprising) and that I really like the house style of Chandon de Briailles (something I’m slowly realizing).

  • 2006 Domaine Chandon de Briailles Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru Aux Fourneaux - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru (10/22/2009)
Overtly stemmy in an appealing way with cinammon and rose petal dominating the nose. Moderately austere with crunchy bright red fruit and some ever so coarse structure on the palate. All things considered, this is a knockout nose and almost follows it up on the palate. At $23 from K&L, a screaming deal. Too bad they’re out of stock or I’d reload in a heartbeat.
  • 2006 Domaine Pavelot (Jean-Marc et Hugues) Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru La Dominode - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru (10/22/2009)
Ripe and sexy, the most complete wine with the best terroir. Buried spice, meaty sauvage notes, dark fruit, great palate concentration and a seamless transition from first sip through the detailed finish. This could almost but not quite masquerade as a good bottle of Gevrey 1er. Best wine of the group but not that far ahead of the Chandon Fourneaux.
  • 2006 Domaine Camus-Bruchon & Fils Savigny-lès-Beaune Aux Grands Liards Vieilles Vignes - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Savigny-lès-Beaune (10/22/2009)
Fresh strawberries and creamy red fruit. A bit soft on the palate with a hint of forest floor and old wood. Quite appealing with sappy rich fruit and a lot of detail but not quite the cut and complexity of the wines it was next to. Still, definitely worth the $23 it set me back.

Nothing to do tomorrow except catch up on sleep made this a night to have more than a single glass of wine  $75 all in for the three wines in question also doesn’t completely break the bank. Realistically, they’re all great values.

where’d you get the Pavelot Josh? Sounds good and thanks for the note!

Seems like the distributor cut the price on it, widely available for $35-40 for the 06, I think I bought it 2 or 3 different times between about $32 and $40. Woodland Hills and I don’t remember where else. Great deal anywhere at $40 and under.
