TN's: DP and Dujac

Wasn’t going to post on this pair of wines but I knew THE Hillbilly would be disappointed if I skipped a par 2.

Great dinner sitting at the bar at the Pluckemin. Really like some of the new fish courses including the Tomba I had last night. Sunchoke soup was great too.

’80 Dom Perignon RD from a custom three pack with a bottle each of '64 and '73 RD. A very mediocre vintage for Champagne with many houses not making a vintage and most of those that did producing a so-so wine. Not sure I would call this a so-so Champagne, but considering it was an RD it was more evolved than other vintages would be. Good fruit and complexity, but it lacked the DP signature round and creaminess. Enjoyable on this night, but they need to be drunk up. Very good plus

’78 Dujac Echezeaux - a couple of years ago I bought six beat up looking bottles of this wine. I opened the first two with the lowest fills - prob 5-6cm and they were both shot. Since then, I hadn’t opened another bottle since I assumed they would all be the same, but I took the best looking of the remaining bottles with me last night. Color and clarity looked very good, so I was very cautiously optimistic. Well, this bottle showed zero signs of any mistreatment. Still a deep rich color upon first pour without any muddling issues. Bright red fruit on the nose with a touch of pine/menthol. The aromatics are intense and waft from the glass. Plenty of red fruit on the palate with great depth of flavors on the palate. A hint of gaminess, but still very clean. Sweet fruit lingers on the palate. A silly good wine. Staggering plus

In this case the issue is the 80 RD, might as well pop an 80 Chev Monty and declare it good plus. Of course, it’s the company not the juice I’m sure.

Thanks for the notes Ray. I still think 80 DP out of Mag (original release) is a nice drink. Not a classic DP, but it can be very good and does outshine the 78. All chocoloate and coffee with some peachy orange fruit to me. Not that big on the 80 DP out of 750, but I have enjoyed a few bottles of the 80 Moet Brut Imperia from 750 mL that I think outshine or at least equal the 80 DP out of 750 mL - a little lighter, but also a little zestier; less expensive too.

Very disappointing, Ray. We are drinking better than that in Raleigh these days!
