Chateau Montelena Cabernet Sauvignon Estate 2000:
I stumbled on a few of these in one of my off-site storage units. I thought I would give it a try since I was having a few people over who generally appreciated New World wines more than anything else. Good ruby/purple color with a slightly perfumed nose- mostly blacks fruits and some toast. The wine was ultimately a little dry. Flavors ranged from the pedestrian to limp. Mostly black plums, some cocoa powder and spice. I remember this wine being not only admirable for the vintage on release but actually pretty good. Now it is just a shadow of itself and really a dull, insipid wine that lacks character and vigor. 83 points
Copain Wine Cellars Pinot Noir Hacienda Secoya 2007:
For Berto . . .
The nose was jumping as the wine was poured into the glass, wafting aromas of wild strawberries, cracked spices and rose petals (perhaps some stems too). I have never been as wild about Wells’ Pinots compared to his Syrahs but this one was a little more up my alley, though I must admit to still not be overly enamored with the '07s like everyone else. This is concentrated and dense, packed with black fruits and some real zest and vigor. What I would like is more acid and less ooze, but I rarely get everything I want. Should drink well for awhile though I would probably prefer it young. 89 points
Brewer-Clifton Pinot Noir Rio Vista Vineyard 2006:
Medium garnet in color, with a nose that bursts with cherry and cinnamon. This is a big wine on the nose but a softer, more restrained wine in the mouth (!!!). Don’t get me wrong, this is still Brewer-Clifton, this is still full-bodied and jammed with all the trimmings but . . . there is always a but isn’t there? . . . it seems to work. I like it better than on release, as I do most '06s. 89 points
