Rebecca and Jay Hack came out to visit Albany to drink wine and to see a Michigan hockey game. We opened a few great bottles on Saturday night to go with pasta and a few cheeses.
- 2016 Domaine Bitouzet-Prieur Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrières - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru (3/28/2026)
Great showing. Richly fruited with light honeyed, buttery, and floral accents on the nose, and a stony mineral undercurrent beneath the fruit on the palate. Love the texture here - it's medium weight and silky, with a polished aspect that seems more prominent as this warms up a little towards room temperature. - 1992 Dunn Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley - USA, California, Napa Valley (3/28/2026)
One of the best bottles of Cali Cab I've in a long time. This is stellar, an immediate wow from the moment it was decanted with a spectacular aromatic profile combining dark fruits, cedar, tobacco, and a truffle-like savouriness. There's real power and intensity to the flavours and the fruit still feels quite intense and youthful, but it also feels so graceful on the palate with a lightness of touch and a finesse that makes it very easy to drink. - 2005 Wendouree Shiraz Mataro - Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Clare Valley (3/28/2026)
I get the sense this is approaching a really good drinking window - it's the least tannic Wendouree I've had (after a decant at the start of dinner), and starting to show a lot of savoury meaty character around its rich core of red and dark fruit. There's a high toned, menthol-like herbal aspect to the nose as well, but the Mataro really comes through strongly here with meaty, brothy, and leathery scents that keep building over time.
