TNs--Barolo night with long-missing mate

The irrepressible Serge Larin was at last back in town for a visit from Mexico. Serge is a dear friend to a number of us on the board, and 4 of us were able to convene in Burlington to meet up with him for dinner. The service from Jamie at La Costa Nuova was exemplary. Liked the deep-fried octopus dish, not as enthralled with the risotto, excellent beef tenderloin. David He, Brian Pattrick and Chris McCart were able to join in. My thanks to Chris for arranging everything with the restaurant.

WINES

2005 Aubert Lauren Chardonnay

Really smoking matchstick and lit gunflint here, very Chevalier Montrachet to be blunt. Sweet corn underneath and lots of almond paste. Mm-mmmmm good. So like a Chevy, with bales of white pepper, sweet mustard, touch of banana. But each sip is remarkably crisp and bright with the nuttiness flowing through. As focussed a wine as I’ve had from Aubert, this loses nothing over a few hours in the glass. Instead, it picks up accents of sour cream and ginger ale later, and much later lemon and a fabulous vanilla ice cream side come through. Brian declared this worthy of a 95 and I think I have no problem with that. I think, much as I love my Ritchies, that this is THE best wine I’ve ever had from Aubert, early-line entrant for WOTY, certainly WOTN tonight. I think it may be nearing the end of its best drinkability window, though, perhaps another 2 years.

2003 Malivoire Moira’s Vineyard Chardonnay

SOME of us finished the Aubert before the octopus even arrived, so we needed another white. I do remember that this was a particularly good year for this wine and wondered how it would stand up after 9 years, so we ordered it off the list. Some sniffs of nectarine and a real floral/perfume component is there now which didn’t exist previously. Palate has a cool-feeling lychee presence, with an after-impression of key lime pie. Very nice, we all agree, though I wouldn’t chance holding this past the end of this year.

2000 Poderi Colla Barolo Dardi Le Rose Bussia

Rich but reserved scents of forest, brambles, cherry and sour plum. To taste, plenty of potential—plenty—but it’s on separate levels right now, the front of the tongue getting burst of strawberry and the back of the throat getting leather and spice without harmonization or flow just yet. That starts to poke through much later, but it is a young wine yet. Quite good.

1996 Dante Rivetti Barbaresco Bricco de Neueis Riserva

Damned tight. Quite present leathery nose with touches of tar, blackcurrant and maybe walnut. But le gout—still…very…tight. Great structure and tannins, but hard right now to fish out the currant fruit and spice, though both were there. I’d say this needs at least a decade. Chris opened it at 1 p.m., see his comments below, and it sat in a decanter for another 3 hours or so.

1996 Massolino Barolo Vigna Rionda Riserva

This has finesse and charm on the bouquet, flowers and a walnut-port edge to black fruit, especially black strawberry. Like the others tonight, gangly at the moment. Brighter fruit and still with nuts. Also some crushed flowers, this stands out for its lovely velvety mouthfeel. Some perfumed aftertaste. Good.

1999 Giuseppe Rinaldi Barolo Cannubi San Lorenzo

Smells just wonderful. Dark chocolate, some espresso, plum, blackberry, a bit of chai tea and some demerara sugar all make their presence known. This has a much longer way to go on the palate, has a peaty bite to it right now, with some tar aspect. Lots and lots of potential, with black strawberry, black raspberry and blueberry. Needs lots of time, but #2 tonight for me.

1996 Elio Grasso Barolo Vendemmia

A very interesting beast. Funk and tar and merde greet the nose. A little molasses and some rich plum lurk underneath. To taste, a striking mesquite side to this that doesn’t go away. Sweet blueberry and blackberry act as counterpoint. More sparkle and some red fruit emerge with time, but that mesquite side…don’t know what to make of that. Certainly unusual.

1994 Warre’s VP

Open for a day, Jamie very kindly brought this to us for us to try. Tempting aromatics of dried berries, slight raisin and definite mocha hint. Very pretty, with florals, bits of chocolate, ripe plum and bit of date, I think. It really needs another day, but very smooth and pretty.

I drank the 05 Aubert Lauren in December 2011 and your note brings back the amazing experience. I was about to stop buying due to price. But, after drinking this recently, I bought 6 more this January. I feel Aubert chards, particularly the Lauren, needs several years to really smooth out and see its best flavors. It was my favorite California white last year. Thanks for the flashback.

Thanks for the notes. I have one bottle of the Rivetti Barbaresco. I had this a few years ago and it was very tight. I have been letting it sit a while longer and I will let it go longer still as you advised.

Mike, sounds like a lovely note - how were the Baroli handled prior to serving?

Nice to read a good report on the 00 Poderi Colla Bussia given the highly mixed reviews this winery has been getting.

re: Dante Rivetti, the guy crafts some seriously structured, manly Barby dolls and this one no doubt has a long, long way to go before it becomes soft.

And yet another just-so-so review of the Massolino Rionda Riserva 96. Thus far I’ve only had one bottle that actually hinted at its long term potential. Another '96 that needs a whole lotta cellar time.

I’ve not had the base 96 Barolo from Grasso, but the Case Mate Ginestra is a real gem.

Oh boy do I ever love a Barolo night… Thanks for the notes!

Are you saying that you don’t believe it will stand the test of time, or that it will?

Glad you guys had some fun, sorry I had to miss it. Hello to Serge!!

Eric, go back to my '96 Retrospective notes and you’ll see I think the Rionda Riserva has a long, brilliant future, but it’s been one of the more stubbornly slow bottlings to develop. Up until the last bottle I had everyone has been shut down.

It was a fine evening, and it was good to see Serge again.

I agree that the '05 Aubert Lauren was wine of the night for me. Of the Baroli, I too liked the '99 Rinaldi. The '03 Malivoire Moira was a decent, mature Niagara Chard, but definitely overshadowed by the Aubert.

Thanks Mike, for being the excellent scribe, as usual.

The restaurant exceeded my expectations and, as a local, I will return.

Mike - I sent you a pm, need your email address…

Nice job MIke.
The 05 Aubert’s are really nice now. Trading Burgundy with Fred for a few 07’s.

rico, I think the Grasso was slow-oxed for 4 hours or so and then decanted. Massolino and Rinaldi also found their way into decanters, each open about 3 hours in there until we had our last sips

Thanks for taking notes Mike. I rarely do these days.
Glad we were able to do this with Serge. Given my short notice, the location worked out pretty well I think. Service was almost too good and the food overall was better than expected, although the risotto was frankly poor.

I found the Aubert very Corton Charlie like and was amazed by that huge ginger kick, some very efficient wood use. Very pleasant and a wonderful Chardonnay. I enjoyed the leaner Malivoire as well. Not falling off a cliff for me at all - in a good spot for my tastes.

The Rivetti was mine. Double decanted at 1pm and re-corked at that time. Enjoyed the nose moreso than the palate, but was delicious. The Massolino was 2nd best red, after the Rinaldi which had that bit more complexity than the other reds tonight.
Not a dud in the lot though.

ah, 'tis a sad thing when the mind goes on you. The joys of getting older. Thanks Chris, I’ve amended the notes on the Rivetti accordingly.

As we have experienced, Ontario Chards can age surprisingly well. Though the Malivoire was mature, and I didn’t think it would get better, I could see it holding a while longer.
