Tn's Assorted Wines from the past couple of weeks

1999 Brane Cantenac: Purchased upon release. My last bottle of this and the best one yet. I liked 1999 Bdx as an early drinking vintage. I drank through a couple of mixed cases and only have a few 1st’s and some Monbousquet left. Textbook meaty/smoky cassis on the nose and palate. Tannins are mostly resolved and integrated. Still has some acidity to lift the finish. Perfectly balanced. Really drinking well now. I don’t think it will be over the hill soon but cannot imagine it getting better. This cost $21. Super QPR.

2005 Chandon Green Point Vintage Rose: Closed w/ a crown cap. Nice bubbles. A bit yeasty for me, but tasty w/ strawberry fruit and a pleasantly acidic, slightly bitter finish. Probably overpriced at Y3000. I’d go buy a couple more if they were Y1500. Oh well.

2002 Boillot Meursault: Purchased upon release. Can this be corked and premoxed? It was drinkable, but flawed. Just a hint of wet cardboard on the nose and a fairly evolved golden hue. A bit maderized and on the edge of palatability. No similarity to another bottle upon release.

2002 Françoise Gay Savigny le Beaune: Purchased upon release. The nose is closed. No amount of swirling or time in the glass over dinner would bring this around. The palate is a different story. Young, crisp Savigny w/ cherry fruit and refreshing acidity. Needs a couple of years. I hope the nose will develop and the slight angularity will smooth out.

2007 Gustave Lorenz Pinot Noir Alsace: Completely devoid of any flavor or aroma. Pink liquid. I never had anything like this. Tap water has more flavor. Weird.

1990 La Dominique: Purchased upon release. Drinkable, not offensive, but pretty boring. I never really took a liking to this while drinking through four bottles over the years. None ever wowed me and now it’s just old, tired, monolithic and limp.

2002 Dehlinger Goldridge Syrah: Purchased upon release. Have I said how much I like Dehlinger lately? This is singing right now. A picture of balance and finesse w/ some CA fruit forwardness thrown it. Violets, stones and fruit on the nose, a full dark syrah fruit filled palate finishing w/ smooth tannins and sufficient acidity. Balance, balance, balance!

David:

Ouch on the Boillot. Henri or one of the other Boillots?

Let us know if you get a chance to head back up to Tokyo. Would be happy to open anything in the cellar for you and your crew.

Steve:
It was indeed, Henri. I’m going to get back to Tokyo. I’ve rolled through Haneda and Narita several times with no opportunity to spend some time. I’d planned a trip for Connie and me in July, sans the boys, to celebrate our 20th. My evil uncle, slave driver that he is, nixed my plan so I had to cancel everything. I’m determined to get there at least once before I leave Japan next August.

I guess I need to check in on my Henri stock then. Keep us posted on your plans. I’m pretty sure we can come up with some wines that would be worthwhile!
