Early last week I received an unusual email from JK at Acker Merrall. The first paragraph was a group invitation to a byob dinner at Colicchio and Sons. Nothing unusual there. The second paragraph however listed me as not only the host, but explained how I was generously pickingup the tab for the group (which turned out to be around 35 people). Quite the gesture of JK to make me such a generous host.
At least I didn’t have to supply all of the wines.
A ton of wine went around the room so i will just comment on some of my favorites.
'66 Dom Perignon Mag - off the chain. Lively effervescence, great yellow fruit, signature DP notes of coffee and chocolate. Only a touch of nuttiness to this perfectly stored mag. Grew as the night wore on. Killer minus
'76 Salon - a vanilla creamsicle with great structure. Blanc de Blancs showing its style.
Such a great laser beam of acidity on the finish. This bottle had decades of perfect drinking left to it. Staggering plus
'76 Cristal - Another 35 year old Champagne with lively effevescence. Great fruit with plenty of complexity, but the sweetness is a little too high for my personal preferences, but not so much not to be extremely enjoyable. A fantastic third place finish. Staggering
'91 Rousseau Chambertin - beautifully elegant and feminine perfumed nose. Plenty of red fruit. Perfect softness and just entering its window of maximum enjoyment. Not a flaw to it. Staggering
Honorable mention to '85 Gaja Costa Russi out of dbl mag.
Always a fun night at an Acker event especially when a bunch of the usual suspects are there.
