Last night ate at the bar at the Pluckemin to try out the April menu. While I always like the menu there, I always look forward to the next month’s changes. No disappointments last night.
’95 Taittinger CdC - As much of this that I bought, it wasn’t enough. Been tearing through these since it is already drinking great with surely decades of more great drinking ahead. A ton of yellow fruit on the nose with lemons in the forefront. Floral with notes of linen too. Very BdB. Light and creamy on the palate with a very crisp finish. Vanilla custard. Staggering
’78 Dujac Echezeaux - opened two bottles - both with lower fills (5-6cm) for their age, but good color in clarity in the bottle. One bottle reeked of sewage the other bottle had some animalistic aromas but was certainly more than just drinkable. Not as good as the bottle I had at the bar a couple of months ago, with some slightly advanced caramel flavors, but there is still a ton of red fruit to this wine especially on the palate. The gaminess grows on me as I consume the wine with food. The fruit lingers on the finish. Biggest downside to this wine is that I have now consumed all that I own. Staggering
Any prefernece between 1998 and 1999? Im am now officially obsessed with the flavors of Blanc de Blanc champagne. Im sure I will buy and try both but Id like to get your take.
I’ve only had the '98 and '99 CdC once each. I don’t remember any significant qualitative difference with both of them being solid but not great. They’re not at the level of the '95
Pluckemin corkage policy is fair. Their list is very comprehensive and priced fairly, but most of the wines are too young for my preferences.
The Plucky is a god send for me - if I am not eating in the city odds are I am eating there.
