2005 Gerard Mugneret Bourgogne Rouge
There’s been some panning of red Bourgognes over the past several months. Some can suck, but this aint one. Medium weight and trilling like a meadowlark from the first pour. Harmonious and facile. The top soil and herbs compliment the red fruit. Bright balanced acidity…and an enjoyable medium finish. It added mass overnight. Not a wine to study but an entertaining flexible food companion. Only bought two of these at $25…a mistake.
2005 Domaine Thenard Givry Clos St. Pierre
Following the guilt-free enjoyable Bourgogne, this was next. Initially more delicate than the Bourgogne and a bit higher toned, it started somewhat fragile but built in from the back. Mineral flecked delicate red fruit. Good acidity with some silty tannins. The tannins suggest that a few more years might benefit it, but the fruit and overall structure are ready now. Just fine for a casual Sunday night with leftover King Salmon. Not sure I’d buy more for $30 but absolutely no regrets. My wife tasted it and commented on the 3 good Pinots in a row from the cellar…what was she trying to say!?
