1996 Azelia Barolo - Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo (5/27/2009)
Good aromatic complexity and intensity. Maturing aromas… dust, blood, tar, cinnamon, dried red fruits, cocoa powder, roses. The palate doesn’t quite live up to the nose but after several hours of air it is slowly fleshing out a little. Nothing tremendous but a nice enough bottle. Ample acidity and a dose of tannin perhaps slightly out of balance with the fruit. As a result I’ll drink up my remaining bottles and make sure to do so with meals. -
2000 Azienda Pier Barbaresco Riserva Rio Sordo - Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco (5/27/2009)
Warm and soft on the nose with ripe fruit, menthol and anise. Not terribly effusive. Soft on the palate as well. Varietally correct and easy drinking but lacking in complexity and character. I’d take a Produttori normale over this for sure.
