'90 Pousse D’Or Volnay Caillerets Soixante Ouvrees-
Very refined, perfumey and elegant nose of resolved sous-bois Pinot with the fine earth and metal/mineral of Volnay. The palate is resolved with elegant but intense dried cherries, some earthy complexity and fairly sharp acidity. The combination of almost dullish ripe fruit and acidity seems a bit out of balance. While I like this, it is more intellectually intriguing than enjoyable and I very rarely find those disconnected. I love the nose but the palate is just average. Very good and ready to drink.
'90 D. Rion Clos Vougeot-
Multi-dimensional nose of maturing plums, cherries and wild game with a whiff of Chambolle-ish perfume. This is delicious, resolved and intriguing on the palate with great mature, marinated cherries and some drying tannin. This is richer and more complete than the Volnay but even here the acidity (maybe it’s me tonight) combines with some slightly rustic tannin to shorten the finish. This is still excellent and complex with food. Ready to drink.
