Last I a few of the boys got together for some bubbles and burgers. We sampled 3 great Champagnes and then hit Danny Meyer’s Blue Smoke for burgers and ribs. (All fantastic thank you very much).
Its nice to venture from the beaten path we seem to make for ourselves. Although todays ‘venturing’ seems a bit wobblier.
1996 Henriot Brut Millésimé -
Very dark straw color. The nose had some butterscotch and with a touch of underlying sulphur. The plate showed beautiful citrus notes with a touch of grassy knoll. Beautifully balanced with the most lilt amount of acidity and just a wee bit creamy, which I do appreciate. A very classy wine indeed. If the nose showed more fruitiness and less sulphur, which never blew off, it would have been just incredible. 90/100
2002 Taittinger Brut –
What a contrast. Light yellow lemon shade of straw. Beautiful bright fruit profile with sun flowers, lemon zest and peach. An elegant wine in a light bodied style. Obviously showing its youth. 91/100
Camille Savès Brut Rosé NV -
The most beautiful burnt umber / salmon color I can describe. The nose was all joy of strawberries. The fine delineated bubble path was incredible. Pure and elegant, but fun and easy, this was a revelation. Some beautiful creaminess and super balanced light mouthfeel, this was just a great rose champagne worthy of popping this summer on the deck. 94/100
you can usually save $10-20 with Camille-Saves compared to Billecart. old g-friend loved Billecart and drained me drinking that wine whenever we went out. Henriot Cuvee des Enchanteleurs is a tremendous high-end bubbly.
Hey Pobega, why didn’t you get me into Champagne a decade ago? The WB Wine Talk forum in the early days was full of still wine tasting notes, and so few Champagne. You were an innovator, man.
Frank is creating some sort of Walking Dead challenge with all the thread resurrections.
It’s funny because I bought a coupla-few of the Camille-Saves the last time Koslosky offered it up at a good price. Haven’t got my shipment yet but that wine is always a winner. Good to see it’s dropped back off the $60 heights it was living at for a while.
