I opened both of these wines on Friday night after a Thursday bottling. I gave each a taste and 4 hours opened to air. I then let them sit under cork in the cellar. Saturday evening I revisited the Napa Valley and Sunday the Las Piedras. If this is any indication then 2012 is going to be a killer year for Mike Smith Cabernet Sauvignon. The NV is a QPR @ $50 that should sell for more. Has a decent dose of Pellet in it and the fruit shows the Pellet Dark cherry and chocolate notes. The Las Piedras is in a league of its’ own. Initially it is very Dr Crane-like but I think that is more style than substance. Just a whole lot going on here. Mike has a way with Cab. Just be happy that he and Andy Beckstoffer do business with each other. Killer release.
2012 Quivet Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Las Piedras Vineyard- USA, California, Napa Valley (6/1/2014)
Opened Friday night, notes from Sunday. This needed all three days to fully evolve. Huge dense complex nose. Black fruit, dark chocolate, spice box, black cherry and anise. Full bodied, rich texture, grippy tannins, balanced acidity. Finishes with chocolate torte, white pepper and blackberry pie. Ho Li Fuk! What a great glass of wine. WOTY candidate for sure!
2012 Quivet Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley- USA, California, Napa Valley (6/1/2014)
Notes from day 2. Dark fruit and cedar. Creamy dark berry, ripe blackberry, mocha, cocoa, chalky sweet tannins, white pepper dark plum. Great Napa Cab @ $50. 72 cases should sell out quickly.
I actually spoke to Mike about this release, as I typically stick with the Myriad Cabs, don’t ask me why, because I don’t know. I was intrigued by the LPV and he seemed to think based on my palate of loving the Crane and his BTK offering from Myriad it would be right up my alley.
There was also a previous post about saving pennies for the Crane Reserve. I don’t want to burst your bubble but that release has come and gone, I am pretty sure it is completely sold out. It was released with the Syrah and Semillon Release, it will ship with the other Myriad Cabs.
I ordered but just a mixed three pack. The cellar is full and we are moving mid month to a temporary place for three to 12 months until we build or find a new house. We won’t have room for more wine for a while.
