2005 Summerwood Cabernet Sauvignon - USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles (8/14/2009)
– popped and poured –
– tasted non-blind over 1.5 hours –
NOSE: very oaky, with some dark fruits and spicy cedar; very one-note.
BODY: dark garnet-purple color of great depth; medium-full bodied; some particulate matter.
TASTE: very oaky; cedar; non-descript dark fruits; well-balanced, but without the structure to age well; drink now - 2011. This bottle was less impressive than the last one, but more varietally correct.

2005 Summerwood Cabernet Sauvignon - USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles (10/15/2008)
– decanted for 1.5 hours before tasting –
– tasted non-blind –
NOSE: dark raspberry and cranberry aromas comingle with a slight manchego cheese type of funk and a hint of oak on this moderately expressive bouquet. I found this to be slanted more towards red fruits than a typical Cab. Sauv. would be.
BODY: clear; purple-garnet color of great depth; medium-full bodied.
TASTE: rich red fruits dominate, with a hint of loam and well-integrated oak providing support; very lush mouthfeel, but clearly too alcoholic; the tannins are grippy and need some cellar time to calm down; the finish lasts for about 30-35 sec., and the palate is full, but disjointed. This cabernet lacks varietal character … it merely tastes like a good “red wine,” but it does not really taste like a Cabernet Sauvignon … there must be some merlot thrown in. Feel free to bump my score up a few points if you’re willing to overlook varietal typicity…I would have scored it a bit higher if I was served this wine blind AND I wasn’t told it was a Cab. Sauv…
