I must have been on a mission of unconscious hedonism last night, which caught up with me this AM. Over dinner, that started with an organic quacamole made by my daughter (which was the size of a 10 quart mixing bowl, I think), then followed by roasted vegetables, twice cooked baked potatoes and organic roasted beets, I awoke this morning with a migraine, clearly a note left on my pillow by the pleasurable excesses of the food and wine below. I didn’t even EAT the steak, by god. This was my last KB Garys’ and I still prefer the Rosella’s, which I continue to buy. The Garys’ was good but was a bit too big, only then to be surpassed by the mammoth size of the Switchback. I think the 2007 will be bigger than the 2005, but I’d like to try them side by side again to see which is the better. The 2007 will not be for everyone, as if I need to say this. But, for those who want to throw the throttle wide open, push the pedal to the floor, not apologize, and just savor what well done, big petite can do, this is Switchback and by god, I ain’t apologizing.

2005 Kosta Browne Pinot Noir Garys’ Vineyard - USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Lucia Highlands (1/3/2010)
Big and fruity, with the brown spiced rich edges, along with the Garys’ indicators of pine floor/resin, strawberry and plum. For me, the alcohol is checked in but I helped kill the bottle with my SIL and daughter, over about 90 mins. I’ll agree with Jordan, in the prime window, so drink now…and after a long meal last night, I finished this KB Garys’ tonight. Similar to yesterday and the richness does come through in the weight and flavor as it warms up. There is enough of the Garys’ in here with the resiny notes on the finish. In the drink window, hit it now. -
2007 Switchback Ridge Petite Sirah Peterson Family Vineyard - USA, California, Napa Valley (1/3/2010)
Opened and poured at the request of my SIL for something big. I said aged or baby petite–he said baby. Out came the cork. Into the glasses, giving up nothing but some cocoa powder. Into the decanter, back to the cellar for a KB Garys’ pinot. We’ll head back to the SR after dinner–it needdddddddddds a decant…at 2 hours in the decanter, into the glass. Big wine, as big as the 2005, maybe more so but smooth and dark, a glass stainer. A molten quality to the wine, molten charcoal, chocolate and dark berry, all liquified with a pure decadent finish. It won’t make it until tomorrow but be sure, this is neither restrained nor delicate–pure, big and long.
