A couple of wines from my son’s birth year to celebrate his birthday (which was actually last month but which we are celebrating this weekend).
The Cheze St. Joseph is really drinking well right now. Spicy, leathery and complex with a nice mouthfeel. Really enjoyed this wine with steak and chipotle mashed sweet potatoes. The feminine side of the NR, soft but layered, with great typicity.
Vina Cubillo is a good classically-styled crianza. Cherry pit, tart acidity and smooth on the finish. Very good, but a bit simple for the price. I would buy a case of this at $15, but not overwhelemed by it at $25. For that price tag, in this general style I prefer some of the cru Beaujolais currently on the market.
