TNs: 2004 & 2006 Felsina Chianti Classico Riserva

Pizza night at the Hughes house, so time for some eye-talian wine [wink.gif]

Only had a sip so far of the 2004 Felsina CCR, but it was brimming with spicy red fruit and vibrant acidity. We’ll see how it develops, as this was a very “angular”, disjointed wine on release, but first impressions right now seem a little more harmonious.

The 2006 Felsina CCR is a translucent red in the glass, with a reticent nose right now hinting at menthol and red fruits. Very nice and round on the palate, with sweet fruit braced by a lot of acidity - I’m betting this will be much better with a slice of 'za.

BTW, post-pizza, I am really impressed with how the '04 has come around in the past two years - still obviously young, but drinking very nicely right now, and to me there is a boatload of upside to this wine. I bought a case on release, but given the price, I should have gotten three, as this wine has a long evolution ahead of it.

The '06 is still a little too young to judge - I don’t see the concentration of fruit and definition that makes the '04 look so promising, but I do think this will end up being a better wine than it’s sibling from '05.

THANKS FOR THE REAL TIME REPORTING BOTH – MAY DIP INTO MY O4S BASED ON THIS

Why are you yelling??

Henry can’t help it - he gets excited by Italian TNs [wink.gif]

Geez Todd. New Heights in oversight of posts… I was tired and too lazy to retype without the shift lock… but I do get excited about excellent CCR…

BTW Bob, Have you had the Fontalloro '04 recently… I also went long on that, with an additional closeout case at $25 per… I suspect its not as EXCITING as the RANCIA, but still an excellent value

Henry, I have a case of it somewhere in the cellar, but haven’t tried a bottle yet (the Fontalloro). I am going to have to try the Rancia again one of these days, as I felt that both it and the CCR were too young-ish on release, but given how nicely knit-together (albeit still quite young) the CCR was last night, the '04 Rancia deserves another look. I’d have to say that, at least based upon more recent vintages, Felsina has been one of my favorite producers in Tuscany when it come to making nice wines at an attractive pricepoint.

agree

Anyone tried the 07 Felsina yet? I just picked up a bottle last night.

You mean the CC normale, right, John? I haven’t had the chance to pick that up yet.
