TN's: 2002 JF Mugnier Chambolle Village and 2002 Mugneret Clos Vougeot

Two absolutely gorgeous wines.

Beauty… The JF Mugnier is light in color but big in flavor. Gorgeous perfume.
i could bathe in it. I love Chambolle.

Power… The Mugneret Clos Vougeot is so deep and hauntingly gorgeous. Dark and yet still sexy. Long finish. Very young and an absolute baby kill. Still this hits my sweet spot.

A needed Burg fix tonight.

I assume the Mongeard is Mongeard-Mugneret Don? I’ve only had one taste of their wines but picked up a couple 99 village and 1er wines recently to get a broader exposure.

I’ve never looked into / heard about any relations / etc between Mon-Mugn, Mugn-Gibourg, Denis Mugneret and Georges Mugneret… do you have any light to shed?

Mug-Gibourg makes a Clos Vougeot as well, though I’m not sure what Don drank.

Dr Georges Mugneret (ie Mugneret-Gibourg)

I think most of the Mugneret relations are distant.
Maybe Denis is a cousin?
Anyway, not much relation between Mugneret-Gibourg and Mongeard-Mugneret that I am aware.

Would you venture stylistic descriptions or comparisons?

Josh,

The Mugneret sisters are more finesse driven.
They have very elegant wines.

Mongeard-Mugneret wines have great fruit but are highly structured.
They take YEARS to come around.

Hope this helps.

Don - did you get a chance to taste the 05 Gibourg Vougeot?

No but I own it I think.
It will rock for sure.
These ladies don’t miss.

Don,
Thanks for the notes on these, good to know. FWIW, I think Mugneret-Gibourg makes the best Clos Vougeot around. They show the potential of the vineyard, and why despite its spotty reputation today, why it was historically among the great vineyards. Really nice to hear what the '02 is up to.

Cheers,
-Robert

Mugneret-Gibourg and Georges Mugneret are the same domaine (for all practical purposes except French administration). The others are probably vaguely related in one way or another, but who isn’t in Burgundy? There’s also a Gerard Mugneret I think.

Good to know the 02 CV is drinking well, I was planning on checking on it in maybe 10 years or so [wink.gif]

Agreed on the Mugnier, I opened this a while back and it was exactly as you described it. Hauntingly beautiful.

Don

Agree with you on the Mugnier. Had it about six months ago now and really enjoyed it. A real beauty.

We had an '06 Roumier Chambolle-Musigny at a tasting last week that showed even better than this despite its youth.

Wednesday Night Burgs: Popped and poured. A delightful wine. Complex nose of red fruit, earth/fungus and iron. On the palate this is barely mid-weight but with good flavor intensity and excellent balance. Fans of bigger wines should probably avoid this because it’s extremely understated and subtle. Properly paired with the right dish, however, this would show even better. (91 pts.)
