TNs: 2001 Mas de Boislauzon - Châteauneuf-du-Pape

NOSE: DAY 1: a very typical CdP nose of cigar, barnyard, garrigue, and spices; hints of tart red fruits as well as blackberry in the background. DAY 2: scent of plum and aged kirsch (starting to get a bit oxidative); red licorice scent.

BODY: hazy ruby color with bricking at the edges; color is of medium depth; medium-light bodied.

TASTE: DAY 1: flavors of garrigue, cigar wrapper and leather dominate the palate; a hint of smoke creeps-in too; the 13.5% alc. is not noticeable; finish is of medium length and medium-light intensity. DAY 2: increased minerality today – a stony taste; still medium-light bodied; the garrigue comes through on the finish, which has lengthened a bit since yesterday. This is the 3rd time I’ve had this in the past couple years – although it’s in a very nice place now, it is on its way down and should be consumed now or in the very near future for maximum enjoyment.

  • 2001 Mas de Boislauzon Châteauneuf-du-Pape - France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape (2/15/2008)
drank this one non-blind against an '01 Guigal CdP. The Boislauzon was clearly a little bit better than the Guigal.

NOSE: nice reductive aroma; gentle spice intermingled with aromas of leather and barnyard

BODY: medium bodied; fine particulate matter suspended in the wine; bricking throughout, orange at edges

TASTE: mature raspberry; gentle spiciness; leather repeated on palate; secondary nuances of bitter chocolate emerge with time.

This bottle received 2.25 hours of in-bottle air time before the event. When this was tasted this was, generally speaking, the group’s favorite wine yet – that would eventually change. Ultimately, this was my personal WOTN - I liked it so much I went to a local wine shop and bought a couple more today(12/31/07).

NOSE: another funky one! (boy we’re doing a good job hitting up the classic-type CdP’s so far!) dark and smoky nose; meaty with a hint of tomatoes and garrigue; graphite; sawdust; slight notes of bitter orange peel and clove peak through too.

BODY: clear; full bodied; nicely balanced

TASTE: smoke; noticeable hints of strawberry on the finish; graphite; quite meaty as well with notes of spice; seamless and very well-balanced. I really love this wine! I don’t see this getting a whole lot better with additional age. Ready to go now!!

This was a $20 bottle about 4 years ago when I scooped a half dozen, all good and at peak over the next 3 years, unfortunately, the $20/bottle days of this producer are in the rear view mirror.

Hi Brian… I still have 2 of eight of these that I bought last year… I’ve loved every bottle. Thanks.

Dan,
Glad you’re still enjoying these! I happened to be in town last week (up in Paynesville) and I stopped in Haskell’s in Woodbury. They currently have a French wines sale going on (all French wines 20% off). They had this mismarked at $32 (supposed to be $40), so I picked one up for $26 – not bad! I was going to stop back in on my way back to the airport, but decided against it, as I still have one more left, very little (ok ok … “no”) cellar space, and I think the corks gotta start popping on these. I look forward to raising a glass with you (hopefully sometime soon). [cheers.gif]
