At La Paulee last year in SF I was blown away by the Matrot white burgs. I was able to find a few with some age and was in the pre-holiday mood to pop and ponder a potentially exceptional wine.
Paired with Michele’s Lemon Pepper Halibut with Canellini Beans, Basil and Grape Tomatoes.
2000 Pierre Matrot Meursault-Perrieres: slightly cheesy, leesy funk rapidly gives way to honey, white flowers and chalky aromas. Extremely well put together, built for aging and drinking beautifully now. Michele and I marvelled at how well-knit this seemed: taut and precise, yet with a bounty of flavor. All this is framed with great structure and grace. Perfect complement to this dinner and we savored it. Man, this is what good chardonnay is all about.
We also popped a .375 of:
2001 Fritz Haag Brauneberger Juffer-Sonnenuhr Riesling Spatlese (AP 2 577 050 7 02, fwiw): nice depth of Riesling with sweet petrol, not cloying, balanced with sound acid and range of flavors. Solid mid-palate notes of apricot, honeysuckle, almond. 8% alcohol made a nice finish to the evening, and paired well with my “seconds” on the halibut.
