TNs: 1995 Pichon Lalande & 2006 Moncuit Blanc de Blancs

  • 1995 Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac (10/7/2019)
One of two bottles opened at a party. Darker garnet with some scarlet at the edges. Arresting, full-scale nose of cassis, dark currant, hyacinth, earth, and leather. Intense, deeply pitched layers of black currant, blackberry, graphite, tobacco, and brambly earth on the palate. Moderate acidity and firm but filed-off tannin, leading to a long finish of echoing dark currant fruit infused with stone and savory earth. Quite delicious. (93 pts.)
  • 2006 Pierre Moncuit Champagne Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs Brut Millésimé - France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru (10/7/2019)
Pale gold color. Nose of brioche, white rock, citrus, flint. Good weight and structure on the palate, yielding layers of pear, apple core, biscuit, schist, and chalk. Fresh, exuberant, and strong, with years to go. One could really taste the wine beneath the fizz. Quite enjoyed this one. (92 pts.)
