Last night I had the 07 Navarro Gewurz, so nothing is going to live quite to that standard of the floral nose, tropical fruit, great balance, etc., of the Navarro. The Navarro is so great that it is almost difficult to point out the components that make it so great. Off-off dry. Restrained nose - more tropical fruit than flower. But just the ideal domestic example of the varietal.
The Sineann is closer to bone dry. The nose is more over-the-top floral. The tropical fruit flavors are spot on. But there is an odd quality to the wine. It’s notably mineral, but it is really low acid. Ultimately, this is a very strange and not completely satisfying wine.
While on one hand you’ve got the bone dryness and the cement, those contrast with the fruit. I love a wine like this, that shows fruit without showing residual sugar. But the lack of acid makes it an oddly flabby wine (despite the mineral/cement quality).
I’ve been a big fan of the winery for years. I love the Zin. I really, really like the Pinots. But this is not the first time I’ve scratched my head over a white. And the low acidity, which isn’t bothersome in the PN, holds back this (as it destroyed one of the dessert wines that I had a few months ago). This isn’t bad, but could have been much better.
Chris - just opened the 08 Navarro Gewurtz “Dry Estate Bottled” and it was fantastic. Navarro, as I and others have stated before, just makes terrific white wines that are varietally correct and super tasty and very well priced. BTW, I loved the 07 too…
And not that I’d want to give them any ideas, but their wines are absolute steals. I haven’t opened the 08 but look forward. It’s our go-to wine for Thai food.
