2006 Maybach Materium: Straight pop and pour, although I should have given it a few hours of decant. Nothing new here…big, massive wine that doesn’t disappoint in any capacity. Oak is still very much in the forefront, but the fruit stands up to it.
2006 Carlisle Zinfandel Montafi Vineyard: Pop and pour with a mixed cheese plate. Immediate nose of blackberries and freshly ground Telicherry pepper. In the glass, dark as night and extremely viscous. Looking at it, you could easily mistake it for a glass of vintage Port. Palate is very expansive and mouth coating with dark fruits, pepper & spice and a bit of tannic grip. No noticed heat like the last couple of '06s that we have had.
2003 Felsina Fontolloro: Pop and pour with dinner on Friday night which was a Sicilian style pizza. Very light in color compared to what I am used to drinking. Very fruit forward nose and palate with very little if any oak. Not a huge, or even big wine by any stretch…but it is very food friendly, especially with some spicy sausage and pepperoni on the pie. I think they should be consumed sooner rather than later.
2004 Felsina Chianti Classico Riserva Rancia: Decanted for a couple of hours in a wide bottom captains decanter. Dark purple in color with a beatiful nose of violets and dark cherries. Very viscous in the glass with nice glycerin adhering to the sides. Lots of grip with fine tannins, but they don’t overpower the fruit at all. Medium long finish. This got better as the night progressed suggesting that a four or five hour decant would serve it well. Got the stuffing to go the distance and last for a few more years.
