2006 Francois et Antoine Jobard Meursault Genevrieres: This was definitely a tale of 2 wines. Opened this up straight out of the cellar and it seemed very much a product of the vintage. It was rich, nearly oozing with fruit and was just a texture machine. Not to say it wasn’t good, there was lots of fruit and it sort of reminded me of a very ripe Chassagne from a good producer. Went to dinner and finished the second half of the bottle when we returned about 2.5 hours later. It had totally changed and was now a classic Meursault. The fruit was much more delineated and even restrained. The nose had a whiff of minerality and nuttiness to go along with ripe Golden Delicious apples. It was definitely still a full throttle wine texture-wise but in a sumptuous and even classy sort of way. I enjoyed both viewpoints of this wine although the second was more appealing and makes me think this wine could use some more time to really resolve its dual personality thing.
2000 Produttori del Barbaresco Asili: I was poking around for a ’99 Rio Sordo but I think I might have a little inventory being off issue. In any case, I bumped into a few of these so I grabbed one for our sort of regular Sunday dinner at Ciao Vito. Glad I couldn’t find the Rio Sordo. This was flat out amazing. The nose was completely cut loose showing black cherries, fresh roses, incredible spices, fresh cement and a little potting soil thing. The mid-palate mirrored the nose except with a tiny bit of restraint in each little facet. What did it for me though was the incredibly lacy, open-knit, silky texture. This was Chambolle in Barbaresco clothing. Just a perfect match of beautiful, classic red-fruit driven Barbaresco flavors on this velvety yet not nearly too soft in any way framework. Given the restraint in the mid-palate and the wonderful cut of this wine I can see this sailing along for years but this was the freaking bomb right now. One of the best bottles of Produttori I have ever tasted. Not usually a big assigner of scores here but I generally find good bottles of Produttori at the 8-12 year stage fall in the 90-92 range for me. This had me thinking more along the lines of a 94 and maybe even 94 with a bullet.
