TNs: 05 Pride, 02 Yquem

  • 2002 Château d’Yquem - France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes (5/17/2010#
I love it when wines with high expectations don’t dissapoint. I was not planning on opening this so it really had little air. At any rate. The nose was a bit muddled at first, but with some swirling it showed an interesting note of eucalyptus that Ive never gotten from an Yquem before. Honey dew, apricots and lemon rind. The palate was unctuous and velvety. A bit of brown sugar and caramel followed by intense apricot, honey and more lemond rind. Lots of acid to clean up the fruit. Will go forever, but I love it now.

Surprisingly powerful nose of chocolate and currants. The palate is full, with generous ammounts of currants, plums and hints of chocolate. Riper than I expected. Great smooth finish. Surprisingly good wine at this stage.

Thanks for the note on the 02 Yquem, a vintage that doesn’t get much talk. Are you an Yquemist and if so how do you rank it next to, say the 03 or 04?

That depends on the thefinition of Yquemist  Ive had maybe 20 vintages. Earliest was 58, 02 is the youngest. The majority were mid eighties to early 90s. I own some 03 and 04 but havent popped either yet.
