Got together for some good wine with 5 buddies, 2 of us collect wine, the others are trying to learn about it. We thought we would fry their palates
Alban Lorraine 2005. Baby killin’ but I wanted to try one. Dectanted it for 10 hours and followed it over 4 ni the glass. Huge intoxicating nose of chocolate, olives, grilled beef, purple flowers. Later in the night it would show some vanilla and black licorice. The palate has great sweetness with blackberries, flowers, more meat, and some plums. Ripe, but not overripe. The only thing off balance were the very drying tannins, nothing time wont solve. Great wine, one of my favorites of the year, up there with Atlantis. Needs 5 to ten years though.
MP Integrity 2002
Powerful nose of beef and plums. Some flowers and black pepper. A little oak as well. Big sweet palate of red and black berries. Nice acid. Less complex than the Alban but up there in size. The tannins are sweeter and more mellow. Could still use a few years, but great wine as well. 3 guys (the less experienced ones) preferred it to the Alban.
04 Elderton Command was cooked.
Mitolo Reiver 2003
At first a bit of spritz that quickly blew off to reveal grilled meats, olives, white flowers. Medium palate with lots of acidiy and bright berries. Smooth tannins. Ready to go and a good wine. Picked up weight and sweetness as the night progressed.
Kilikanoon The Oracle 2003
Sweet chocolate covered cherries, a little heat, olives and even some stones? Hint of beef and herbs. Great acid on the full palate of ripe raspberries, beef and a little chocolate. Sweet tannins, nice finish. Very Good.
2002 Switchback Ridge Cab.
This wine belongs in this group, as I suspected. Big nose of oak, cranberries, black fruits, baking spices, maraschino cherries. Big palate of dark and red berries. A hint of a green streak that was off putting to me but noone else seemed to notice. Sweet tannin. Good wine but the green thing made me not put it in the same category as the best of this group.
