TNs: 01 Fourrier (gack), 04 Fourrier (meh), 05 Humbert (yay)

Some recent tastes. I picked up the Humbert on Twelftree’s recommendation from K&L and am happy to have done so.

  • 2005 Domaine Humbert Frères Gevrey-Chambertin - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin (10/1/2009)
A middleweight wine, very pretty and very sappy. Sweet red fruits, dusty loamy earth, a medicinal twinge and hints of herbs and spice. A bit of a short / washed out finish perhaps but a minor complaint at the price. While perhaps a touch simple this is an honest and thoroughly tasty wine now and undoubtedly better in a few years.
  • 2004 Domaine Fourrier Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos St. Jacques Vieille Vigne - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru (9/28/2009)
Given several hours to open this is very sappy with good weight. Dark red fruits, medicinal notes, a bit of iron and, unfortunately, mirepoix. Not enough to halt enjoyment, by any stretch, but enough to definitely notice and not be able to ignore. Could use a bit more focus, and who knows on the aging curve given the meanies showing up, this was just a singleton for me and provided more enjoyment than most 04’s have, but I’m still glad to have few 04’s left.
  • 2001 Domaine Fourrier Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Gruenchers - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru (9/28/2009)
VA. Ruined. 01 Fourrier seems to pretty much be a write off across the board, Griottes, Gruenchers, Champeaux and Clos St Jacques all having been marred by VA lately. Pfffft…

I’m puzzled by the accounts of spoiled Fourrier 01s from across the ocean, mine have been marvellous throughout the range-in fact I have tended to think it the best of all vintages here.

Tom – I had a superb Fourrier 2001 CSJ on Josh’s side of the pond two weeks ago.

I had a Gruenchers that was still in good shape about a year ago… recent results have not been so positive, unfortunately :frowning:
