TNR: Sperino Nebiolo

Anyone try and like these as much as Antonio apparently did? Thanks.

Bought 3 bottles, but they’re on hold for future shipment.

Very good stuff. Personally, I find the Lessona too expensive, given what I can buy elsewhere in the area. Out of curiosity, what did Antonio (I assume you mean Galloni) give it? 99 points?

Just opened the:
2010 Proprietà Sperino Uvaggio
Costa della Sesia Rosso
Paolo de Marchi
last night. This is Nebbiolo blended with Vespolina and Croatina (local grapes), rated 94 by AG. Very interesting, but I don’t have a good read on it yet–there is a 1/2 bottle left over so we’ll see.

Is this prompted by the WB ad I just saw?

Nice wine. I’m drinking the last of my '08. I’m a fan of most Marchi’s wines.

Tasted the Lessona at a Decanter scrum tasting today, and reasonably high expectations were dashed - my tasting companion said it tasted like a Tuscan wine made in Piemonte… ouch! It certainly didn’t taste much like Nebbiolo.

Maybe an unrepresentative bottle - I hope so at the price this goes for.

Ian

I tried the Lessona 07 some time ago and was very impressed.
A really wonderful expression of Nebbiolo.

Tried the 09 Costa della Sesia Uvaggio and the 08 Lessona in January.

FWIW, these are my notes:

Uvaggio
First taste: Piemontese blend, light wieght, slightly bitter red fruits, round, fruity.
Second taste: fuller, rounder, not “tight”, a little “sloppy”.

Lessona
First taste: Fine, elegant, lithe mouth feel, classic red to black fruit, tar, a little rose. Opens up and fleshes out with air, surprisingly richer on finish.
Second taste: Extremely well-balanced, sweet red cherries, acidic.

I liked the Lessona but it seems pricey. Objectively very good nebbiolo but I wasn’t moved to buy.

No, I got it in Jan from grapesthewinecompany.

I drank '07 Lessona last week at dinner and liked it quite a bit. The comment about Lessona tasting like a Tuscan wine made in Piemonte is cute and catchy, but inapplicable to '07. More fleshy and forward than Barolo or Barbaresco of similar age, but clearly Nebbiolo.

I have been buying, selling and drinking these wines for 4-5 years. Did a visit to the winery 3 years ago. Been pouring the Rose by the glass for three months. The wines are very good and can be excellent if given enough time. Especially the Lessona. The wines are very clean and made in a slightly modern style, without going over the edge. Not sure what Antonio said about them, but he has only been complimentary toward them in the last few vintages. He and I got into it a bit over one of his statements about the wines.

Hi
For clarity, the vintage tasted yesterday was the 2009. On a single bottle it’s fair to take my comment on yesterday’s wine with a degree of caution. Given the chance I’d taste again, but definitely ‘try before buy’ after that experience.

A shame as I like the region, and indeed the Collezione Syrah from Isole e Olena, so I’m not averse to their branching out from Chianti/Sangiovese. A successful Sperino should really help the Northern Piemonte wineries. I was quite looking forward to tasting it!

Ian

Anyone try one of these lately? Peter K, how was the second half? I see K&L just restocked these. $27.94. From there website: 94 points Antonio Galloni

The 2010 Uvaggio jumps from the glass with freshly cut flowers, mint, spices and sweet red berries. The Uvaggio is vibrant and mid-weight, yet it possesses lovely fleshiness. Savory and floral, the 2010 does a brilliant job of balancing aromatics, fruit and structure, all in a hugely appealing wine that is utterly irresistible. The brilliant, saline-infused finish adds considerable character and personality. What a gorgeous wine this is. (3/ 2014)

I had the 2010 Uvaggio about a month ago. Totally different vs. my experience with the 2009. AG’s note it spot on. Plenty of acidity and mineral notes to give that gorgeous fruit vibrancy and sturdy backbone.

The Rose is a favorite of mine in the last 3 vintages.

A brief note on the 2007 Lessona:
4/27/2014 Slow O all day. Relatively light in color as befits Nebbiolo but a big wine in flavor and tannin. Nose just beginning to open. I think it will be good but definitely not ready.
