tnr: patricia green 2008's

I know that the strength of the 08 vintage in OR has been commented on here - does anyone have any thoughts/tasting experiences with patty’s 08’s?

Not yet, but I will by next week. Going up there on Friday for the weekend.
Given the strength of the vintage and reasonable pricing, It’d be a pretty safe bet. The letter said they are selling a second label 08 Pinot this year(Dollar Bills Only) for $17. With the SVDs priced at $30-40, it’s hard to go wrong. My favorites are often the Balcombe, Old Vine, Eason and Croft(volcanic fan). 08 reserve is $25 this year.

ok - thanks john - look forward to hearing from you on your visit…

Good luck!
I have not seen any winemakers that think their Oregon 08s pinots are ready to drink yet.

The mailer said they will be pouring 14 to 16 Pinots- I’m assuming they will be 08’s.

…deja vu…

All over again!

I think Cabot is having vuja de.

Could be. Patti and Jim have always released their wines about now, FWIW. All of them.

Tom at La Cadeau is releasing three of his 08s now. I’m sure Tom would even pour them for you if you asked. The mailer clearly says the drinking window for two of them starts in 2011, and the third not till next summer.

Don’t know about Patty Green, none have came on the market here. If you want to call it de vuja from me, that’s OK. My comment was that just because they’re out, or being poured, doesn’t mean they’re even close to their drinking window. Two completely different issues. So Good Luck and Enjoy at the tasting, you’ll get what you get this early.

I agree these are probably not near their drinking windows but I am sure John has tasted a few young wines and would be able to make and educated assessment. I mean you can’t wait until 2011 to buy these wines so it is reasonable to expect to get a taste if you make a visit.

I’m also assuming the other usual suspects will be releasing their 08’s- Bergstrom, Sineanne, Brick House, Owen Roe, Shea, Ayres, etc.

I’m expecting most to be still pouring their 07’s, which is nice, since I missed last year for the first year in over 10. Hoping to seek out some other board members this year as well.

John;

The last time I talked to Dick Shea, he wasn’t expecting to even bottle his 08s pinots until next month (Dec). Brickhouse had only bottled one of its 08s. I think it was Lemelson I talked to earlier this week and they hadn’t even made final blending decisions for the 08s yet. You will be tasting mostly 07s.

Jason;

For me it becomes a matter of trust, which may be foolish. I know Tom’s wines and his philosophy. So on that, I bought his 08s. None will be opened until at least 2011 and probably even several years later. I think barrel tastings are fun, but I have no belief that what I taste from the barrel will in any way be what comes out of the bottle in the final blend, with age. I likewise have no belief that any impressions I would get from infantcide today would truly represent what I will get from the wines by waiting until their windows open up.

Am I missing something here? Do you guys know something I don’t? Not trying to be a broken record. [scratch.gif]

[rofl.gif] actually nothing to do with you.

John, there’s a long running dramady here between Gordon and Bob. Gordon has elaborate opinions that Bob rarely if ever agrees with. Sometimes it seems that Bob’s a little quick on the anti-Gordon trigger. Other times it seems Gordon answers questions that weren’t asked. In this case, someone’s looking for thoughts on Patty Green '08s and Gordon’s responding to a phantom question about whether the '08s are ready to drink. Which we’ve discussed previously, under the context of how ageable the '08s might be, particularly when compared in general to the '07 and ever '06 vintages. So, the broken record.

Of course it’s worth trying the wines now. At the least, if the track record or even philosophy of a producer is enough for Gordon to buy, surely it’s reasonable to allow others to take the mighty step of actually tasting the young wines before purchase.

I posted on my September visit here Tasting "impressions" Oregon Willamette trip - long/self indulgent* - WINE TALK - WineBerserkers where PG was the only winery we visited pouring 2008’s though some were from barrel. Here’s what I wrote:

Next we got some 08, the only 08 reds we had during the trip.

Willamette Reserve 2008 > - Wow, this is something special, back up the truck for this $25 wonder. This is certainly up there with the 07 vineyard designates and a great endorsement for 08 on Ribbon Ridge. While still primary it is already showing depth and great aromatics. A-/A

Balcombe Vineyard Dundee Hills 2008 > - This is a little hard to pin down at this stage but it appears to have the potential for a delightful big fruit and mineral wine. Laser sharp but with some earth hints. A bit hard to read at this stage but we bought it and I’m betting it is an A before things are said and done.

Notorious 2008 Ribbon Ridge and Dundee Hills (I think) 2008> . All oak treatment that might scare some off but not my SO. She just in love with this brooding big Pinot. Ripe and rich, this is an exotic and very spicy wine that takes no prisoners and might just warrant its $70 entry fee. If everything falls into place who knows? A???

Looking back [on the trip] I seemed to prefer the 06s to the 07s (which could be for several reasons: age, taste preference, luck of the draw, etc) but I wouldn’t call it night and day. They are mostly two different animals and it depends a bit on what animal you want to BBQ tonight. > We are in for a treat with the 08s if the Patty Green are any indication.

I just got in a case and a half of the PGs this week. Maybe I’ll pop a 2008 Reserve tomorrow and report.
