TNR: Alban Reva 2004

Looking for feedback on this wine.

Bill Landreth calls this a “disjointed, alcoholic mess.” On the other hand, CellarTracker gives it an average (and median) rating of 93 on 98 notes.

Any other opinions?

Mike, as one of those 98 (and a relatively early poster, though I was right at the median), these sometimes start off seemingly hot, but there is a balance that bears patience… even thru the heat one can sense something more. Like Saxum, this is one of the few CA syrahs I continue to buy (I’m not on the Carlisle train, having had little experience with them). And I get more pleasure from these than I have had from almost any SQN.

Like Mr. Dietz, I’m also a fan of Reva. Agree wholeheartedly with his comment above. My tasting notes from CT are below:

My Public Tasting Notes (range of 93-95 pts. in 2 notes)

3/14/2009 rated 95 points: Popped and poured at restaurant. Opulent, fruit forward bomber of a wine. Gobs of concentrated ripe dark fruit - dark cherry, blueberry, plum - with slight hints of spice, tar, iodine. Full, balanced mouthfeel with long finish. (1079 views)

12/11/2008 rated 93 points: Starts out with room-filling aromas of blueberry, blackberry, lavender and honey. Dark and dense, super concentrated with gobs of cocoa and dark fruit with notes of tar/asphalt wrapped around a core of medium/fine tannins. Long finish. Still a bit tight and hot. Can benefit from another year or two of bottle time. (1600 views)
