TNR: 2011 Lewelling Cabernet Sauvignon

Anyone had this? Thanks.

Has it even shipped yet?

Not this, but I’ve had 6 bottles of the Hayfork and none were ready yet. It took a lot of air to get them to open up. These were remarkably dense, concentrated wines I think atypical of the vintage. This is a great site that appears to have done very well in '11.

What’s the story with Hayfork?

I’ve bout Lewelling since 2008 and wasn’t aware of Hayfork…

had the 2002 the other night and it was excellent.
Clean, Purity, a little earth some nice minerality and a finish that expanded and kept going for 40+ sec.
Love these wines!

Jorge - This is Haley Wight’s personal label. She farms and makes her own wine off the ranch. I’m not sure if it’s a specific block or what. Fantastic wines though! Story here: https://hayforkwine.com

Hayfork is sourced from the Lewelling Ranch and is made by a Lewelling descendant, Haley Wight. Great stuff.

As for the 2011 Lewelling Cabernet, I seem to vaguely recall reading that the Wight was declassified and was blended into the regular Lewelling.

Thanks! When I tasted at Lewelling in 2010 (or was it 12?), I met Haley. Very nice person. She’s the winemaker at Lewelling as well, correct?

Thanks for putting me on to the wines, I’ll definitely be placing an order.

I believe that is correct. A bunch of enablers here… [highfive.gif]

David Wight is the winemaker of Lewelling. Correct, there was no Wight Vineyard designate for 2011.

Available at retail here.

The 2011 would have been ordered by list members in November of 2013 and will ship this fall. Tasted it with Dave Wight on the property this past May and really enjoyed it.

I tasted the 2011 (alongside both 2010’s) late last year at the ranch with Dave Wight. The 2011, to me, was almost a throwback vintage. Lighter in style, higher acid, just a hint of green olive perhaps. Reminded me of some wonderful Napa cabs from the 70’s I have been fortunate to taste over the paste few years. It’s very food friendly, and one of the better 2011’s I have had to date. Only one bottling for 2011, and it sounds like even with that, a bunch of wine didn’t make the cut.

Thanks for the info on the 2011. Do you think they will be ready to drink upon (mailing list subscribers) release?

Your thoughts on both 2010’s?

Thanks for any info.

Will do the 2011 with ribeyes tonight and report back.

My thoughts on the 11, it will probably drink pretty nicely as a young wine, as the tannin’s are lighter than they typically are for this wine. That being said, I think they will potentially last longer than the 03’s (the last difficult vintage for them) which are on the downside, and should be consumed in the next few years at the latest.

For the 10’s I would bury them in the back of the cellar for a few years. They are both stunning wines, but need some time for everything to come together. I think the 02’s are just now coming into their own. We had an 06 a few weeks back, and it was still a big beast, and needed lots of air to come around.

This wine is always good. We are lucky to get a coup,e cases a year, and regardless this is a Napa benchmark for Cab…under 1000 cases, and unique to site, its very vintage specific, if you like the vintage dive in, if not, don’t. End of the day it speaks to site, and very few sub $100 Cabs in Napa can say that.

Tasted this one when visited lewelling and it was very nice for the vintage.

Anyone tasted either of the 2007s lately?

Drank last 2007 Napa and Wight. Wight much more structured, I’d drink next 2017 if I owned more, Napa had more fruit and I’d wait 3-4 years to drink another too…odd, but two different expressions, and I like tamer fruit and more resolved tannin.

As I said above, we’ve sold these.
