TNR: 2008 Pride Cabernet

I just went in for 3 bottles today sight unseen as I like Foley’s style on Spring Mtn. Hoping to later get my hands on the Reserve or Claret.
The 1994 Pride Mtn. Cabernet Reserve was one of my WOW hope this bottle never ends wines opened in 2009 (10/20/09 4th wedding celebration).

Had it this past weekend at the winery. FYI Sally Johnson is the winemaker. I liked the 2008 Cab quite a bit as it tastes typical of the vintage (at least compared to several other 08 mountain Cabs), quite broad and some minerality, without the sheer power of 07, but lots of interesting flavors, balance and structure.

I have bought Pride Cab every since 2001. They definitely dropped the ball, quality wise, from 2003 to 2006. I actually like their 2007, even though Foley had nothing to do with it. I have been on the fence about them for 2008. Perhaps I will try a few.

I have bought Pride Cab every since 2001. They definitely dropped the ball, quality wise, from 2003 to 2006. I actually like their 2007, even though Foley had nothing to do with it. I have been on the fence about them for 2008. Perhaps I will try a few.

Have you tried the 05 Cab lately? I think it was a bit closed down on release, but the last bottle I had was quite good.

I have one left. I agree that the 05 was decent. But for my tastes, the 01 and 02 Prides were spectacular. Perhaps it was unrealistic to expect Pride to maintain that level of quality.

I hate to be negative but I opened a 97 Merlot last week. It tasted OK but no secondary development at all. It has only lost some of the youthful fruit- no complexity. I have found the same outcome with the 96 and 97 cabs- no secondary development. These wines exactly fit the stereotype that CA wines ‘last but do not age’.

OTOH, I had a cab reserve a few months ago which was getting secondary complexity and was very nice. I cannot remember the year but it was mid-late 90’s I’m pretty sure.

I have a theory that Pride wines are best consumed young.
Their 2001 cabernet franc blew me away. Thought about sourcing one, but hesitate as the reality might not match the last bottle.
