Have an opportunity to grab some of these at a very good price. Anyone have any recent experience? I’ve heard Pio Cesare can sometimes be a little heavy handed with oak, which is not my style, so I’ll be interested to see what everyone has to say. CT reviews seem pretty good, but not many are super recent.
Can’t help on the 2000 but enjoyed several 99 and 01’s. The last 01 was last year at Christmas.
I prefer traditional styled Barolos and enjoyed them. If the price is good, I would pick some up.
If I recall correctly, the normale is traditional styled and is not aged in barriques. I believe the single vineyard Ornato is more modern in style.
Al, do you happen to remember how long you decanted the 01? Did it throw much sediment?
Double decanted about an hour prior. Don’t recall sediment, but I would guess there was a fair amount.
It’s been a number of years since I had the 2000, but I’d guess it would be a good wine and in the early part of its prime window now.
The Pio Cesare Barolo is not their modern cuvee (that is the Barolo Ornato), but it’s somewhat “medium” in style as compared to the old school and the modernist Barolos out there. It doesn’t high major highs, but it (and their Barbaresco) are generally well-made wines with pretty decent pricing and availability.
Thank you everyone for your answers. The price is right so I am going to take a shot on a couple.
