I just got offered 2 bottles of Cos 1980. I know it isn’t a great year, but it is my birthyear.
$60 per.
Any recent experiences?
1980 eh?

Hard to turn down a birthyear wine from Cos… I love Cos, probably one of my all time favorite producers. I’ve had all the vintages from 85 up (except the elusive 87 and 91-92)…
Haven’t been disappointed by any vintage and been surprised by some that were supposed to be from a bad vintage. a 1980 might be pushing your luck though but like you said, it’s your birthyear wine so that is worth something I’m sure.
I bought some 1981 Cos, since it’s my son’s birth year.
Bordeaux like this lasts a long time. I would say go for it. Of course you have to understand there is a certain lightening of the dense flavors, but I think old Bordeaux has a certain elegance that can be hard to find in any other wine.
I can pretty much guarantee that I would like it. I can give no guarantee that you will.
I like old Bordeaux. I was just worried about the vintage as I think i have only had one wine from it, I’d have to check through my notes.
The price is alright and I have never had a Cos. So it is very tempting. Though it still isn’t cheap, so I don’t want to buy solely for the experience of drinking a birthyear wine as I have had a number already.
I’m still on the fence!
It’s risky. I bought a bunch of 1980 Bordeaux near release because the price was low. When I say a bunch, I mean like one bottle each of 10 wines. This was early in my wine life and my income-producing life, so it was my first chance to buy a first growth. I drank them over the next 20 years or so. The Latour was the last one and was the only one that wasn’t OTH near the end. 1980 was a really bad vintage for Bordeaux. I would pay $60 for the Latour at this point, not much else.
Thanks Ken. I know the reputation. he also has Petit Village for $40. I think I’m going to pass. Too many great Berserker deals today sucking up my money.
