Berserkers,
God I love Alsacian wine. My forced abstinence is over, I got home last night at 9:30 from Montreal and wasted no time making dinner and cracking this sucker open:
Zind-Humbrecht 2008 Gewurztraminer Wintzenheim – This is a gorgeous but voluptuous Alsacian that I cannot believe is not labelled as a Vendanges Tardives. Still, the Indice 5 on the label should be a fair warning as to what you’re getting into with this.
Deep but not dark gold in the glass with a bit of shimmer to it. On the nose, heavy aromas of buckwheat honey, lychees in syrup, and candied ginger. In the mouth, fat sweet but well-rounded flavors of honey, lychee, and honeydew melon that lead into a surprisingly dry and even somewhat bitter ginger spice finish that tingles on the tongue. There’s a touch of lemon peel flavor and acidity to balance this out, but only just.
This is definitely a fat styled wine and needs either rich savory food or a creamy dessert to complement it or something with an acidic bite to it to balance it out like a ceviche or a salad with vinaigrette or a lemon tart. Note that in my picture I am having it with a simple but rich veal parmesan and brown rice dinner to stand up to the wine.
Ridiculously good wine but definitely not to all tastes, especially if you prefer a drier wine to go with your food. This sucker has a whopping 68 g/L of RS which to date for me personally is the highest RS level I’ve ever seen in a non-VT or SGN Alsacian wine. Of course, Z-H does make much drier wines but really, who cares about those? Definitely a case of go big or go home in the case of this wine. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED but drink it as a dessert wine or match food very carefully with it.
