Yacochuya 2004:
So a few weeks ago I tasted a number wines with Thierry Haberer of Rolland Collection. Among the wines we tated were some really nice Bordeaux ('05, '06 Bon Pasteur, '06 Fontenil, etc.) and the '04 Yacochuya. Perhaps in a scenario echoing that of the Sierra Carche/WOWC incident all of the wines showed very well. Maybe they were “prepared” properly before they were showed to me or maybe I am just a bit paranoid like everyone else drinking/purchasing wine these days . . . damn you Posner!
I took home a bottle of Yacochuya to show to one of my South American friends who was staying with us during the holiday weekend. He generally likes Malbec so I thought this might be a real treat for him . . . and after all the wine showed pretty well just ten days before! During the UGA/OK St. football game we cracked it open. Immediately the wine gave off powerful scents of violents, super-ripe blackberries and vanilla. I poured some in our glasses and took a sip. Hhmmm . . . Super-ripe, super-concentrated fruit for sure, I wondered if it might settle down. Fortunately I had other things to occupy me (food for example) and I left the wine alone. When I came back I was in for a real treat. The wine had changed . . . this time into a Krispy Kreme donut! I have never had a wine that tasted like a slightly hot, glazed, sugar-creation before, but this one sure did. And worse than that it tasted nothing like wine or more precisely nothing like the wine I remember tasting before. WTF?
Now I like Krispy Kreme as much as the next guy, but not as a drink . . . despite Richard Blais’ attempt to get me to drink one a Flip Burger in Atlanta (the Krispy Kreme milkshake is truly vile!). This wine was horrific. I saved the bottle for the next day to see if the flaw was merely my imagination at work . . . giving me something entertainging to do to take my mind off my wife’s screaming at the television because of Georgia’s poor play. Alas the next day it was more of the same. Krispy Kreme with blackberry compote. Not a fan. Please, everyone, tell me if you have had this wine and if something similar has befallen you? And, I have heard good things about this wine- I would like to try a good version of this wine; what should I search out? 65 points
