TN: Winestreets does 2009 Red Burgundy

WINESTREETS DOES 2009 RED BURGUNDY - Acqua Restaurant (4/6/2012)

Wonderful lineup of wines and I was amazed at how well the 09s were showing. Most will improve which is scary how good they will be in time. Thanks to Brad and Kevin for putting this together.

  • 2005 Mumm Napa DVX Rosé - USA, California, Napa Valley
Very nice with strawberry, chalk, lemon and spices. Medium finish and full of flavor. (91 pts.)
  • 2004 Domaine Darviot-Perrin Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrières - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
Nice overall and should be consumed now. Medium gold in color with apple, minerals and shells. Went great with mussels. (91 pts.)
  • 2004 Domaine Darviot-Perrin Chassagne-Montrachet Blanchot Dessus - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet
The nose was a little muted and slight oxidation issues. Chalk, grapefruit and hint of lemon. Short to medium finish and lacks the richness of the other two bottles. (88 pts.)
  • 2004 Vincent Girardin Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Le Cailleret - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru
Drinking really well right now and a rich wine. Good concentration on the palate featuring shells, orange peel, spice and minerals. Complex medium to long finish and a balanced wine. Drink now or enjoy over the next three years. (93 pts.)
  • 2009 Domaine Henri Gouges Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Clos des Porrets St. Georges - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
Wonderful start to the reds with rose petals, spice, smoke, cherry and chalk. The wine was balanced and drinking well right now however should be cellared for five plus years. I could see this wine improving a few points and a good value overall. (93 pts.)
  • 2009 Vincent Girardin Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Cazetiers - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru
More fruit forward wine with strawberry, cherry and cranberry. Also add in spices and minerals on the palate. The wine was one of the more tannic wines tonight but was very refreshing. Cellar five plus years. (92 pts.)
  • 2009 Thibault Liger-Belair Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Saint Georges - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
Should improve with age and my wine of the night! Complex with earth, ripe fruit, coffee and spices. The perfect “funk” quality on the nose that makes you realize how good Burgundy can be. Long finish and tannic and should age nicely for 30 years. 94-96. (94 pts.)
  • 2009 Vincent Girardin Charmes-Chambertin - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru
Really a great bottle and showing well right now. Mushrooms, funk, strawberry, spices and floral notes. Complex and pack with flavor and finishes with over 45 seconds. Should benefit with some cellar time. (94 pts.)
  • 2009 La Pousse d’Or Volnay 1er Cru Clos de la Bousse d’Or - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
Certainly not a Parker 96 or will ever reach that mark. Lots of heat on this one along with sweet fruit: cherry, raspberries and strawberries. While the heat settle down some I don’t see enough complexity here and the wine finishes with too much spice. Not balanced at the moment. Give it some time. 90-92. (90 pts.)
  • 2009 La Pousse d’Or Volnay 1er Cru Clos des 60 Ouvrées - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
Another tight La Pousse wine with cedar, dust, blueberries and minerals. Quite tannic at this stage of the game. Medium finish with nice minerality. Time will tell. 90-92. (90 pts.)
  • 2009 Vincent Girardin Corton-Renardes - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru
Minerals, cranberry, floral and spice. Tannic but shows quite a bit right now. Nice use of oak and complex on the palate/finish. Medium in length. Drink over the next 20 years. (93 pts.)
  • 2009 Thibault Liger-Belair Clos Vougeot - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru
Interesting wine but tasty. Orange peel, oak, cherry and earth. Nice minerality on the palate and good acidity. An age worthy wine with a medium to long finish. Should improve over time. 93-95. (93 pts.)
  • 2000 Domaine Rene Leclerc Griottes-Chambertin - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Griottes-Chambertin Grand Cru
Real nice value. Rustic with raspberry, earth, blueberries and strawberries. Plenty of fruit left here and smooth tannins. Drink now and enjoy! (92 pts.)
  • 2006 Domaine Georges Mugneret/Mugneret-Gibourg Vosne-Romanée - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée
After looking at all the Cellar Tracker scores on this wine it might have benefitted from some decanting. I will have to try it again as I got floral, dust and earth and found it quite bitter. Reserved judgement for now.
  • 1999 Domaine Armelle et Bernard Rion Clos Vougeot - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru
Flawed just got must, mushrooms and minerals. NR (flawed)

John, thanks for these notes. The only wine I’ve had is the Pousse d’Or Clos des 60 Ouvrees, which I liked OK, but it seemed very big and ripe and gaudy to me. I mistook it for Copain’s '09 Kiser en Bas from Anderson Valley in a blind flight. I will say that on day 2, it had settled right down and seemed much more graceful and much more Volnay. I think it will be an outstanding wine, but will need a lot of time to get there if one wants a typical expression of Volnay Caillerets. Tasting this wine on day 2 made we wonder if this is how the 1959’s tasted upon release.

I’ve almost universally found gaudy '09s to calm down greatly on day 2, letting the structure peek out, which I think bodes very well for ageability. I think there’s more tannin/dry extract buried under all that fruit than most people think. Hopefully the baby fat will provide a buffer so that the wines won’t close down as hard as some vintages have.

It should be noted that I had the '09 Pousse 60 and the Bousse recently in a tasting and the fruit had already mostly calmed down, and the wines were kind of closing up, it seemed. So maybe I’m wrong. :frowning:

I’ve drunk a number of '09 in the last few weeks, and they seem to all look just too ripe now (more so than on release).

I’m going to leave them alone for a while now I think…

I agree. From what I have had recently at other domaines I think it is time to put the 09’s away, they are definitely starting to shut down for me. I have heard the same from a few other Côte d’Or vignerons that they believe the same is happening too.
