WINES AND KEBOBS - (10/15/2014)
Guys - we always say the same thing - we do not do this enough. We say it every time - and it had been a decade. I would say that it is a positive sign - in a world that is so prone to change - this has not. Let’s keep it this way!
Thanks to Bob, Doug and Reme for a lovely autumnal evening. Now to the notes!

2012 Ratzenberger Bacharacher Riesling Kabinett trocken - Germany, Mittelrhein
I would say this is good now but would improve in a few years. Not a long ager but a few years would let this powerful version of a kabi mellow and come together more. citrus and citrus peel dominate, with more tropical - pineapple and coconut coming in with time. touch of grapefruit and great refreshing acidity in the mid. There is power and mineral notes as well. deeper than one would expect at first. the finish is clean but just a tad soft. I think that will improve with time. If i had to taste this blind I would say more Pfaltz than Mosel (who would ever guess mittelrhein?) (89 pts.)

2007 Thomas Pinot Noir Dundee Hills - USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Dundee Hills
WOW. this began in Burgundy and finished in Piedmont and Old Rioja. One of the best reds i have had in a while. Earthy, floral nose that became more leather and soy with time and then moved to forest floor and mushrooms with ripe cherry (sour) notes. Mid went from more earthy and red berry dominated at the start to lusher, richer cherry notes and red currants as time went on. the nose continues to morph - just smelling it over several hours is an experience in itself. Amazing stuff. (96 pts.) -
2001 Domaine Pierre Usseglio & Fils Châteauneuf-du-Pape - France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
love the vintage. and this was just another classic well aged example. Mature though nowhere near done. Blueberry and meat pie. herbs, tobacco, red and black fruit. Very refreshing mid, over time - more fruit with a lovely tart strawberry component. long finish with a bit of warmth - not really hot but great on a cool evening. well balanced and mature CdP. YUM (91 pts.) -
2007 Podere Scopetone Brunello di Montalcino - Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
outclassed tonight - which may make this note a bit unfair. The nose was of ripe fruit, with floral notes. over time it developed more zing but still lacked that iron/meat component. The mid is ripe with red berries dominating. Raspberry comes to the fore. good acidity in the mid but the finish is a touch short. Good though sadly unexciting wine tonight. (90 pts.)
thanks again - and lets plan the next one soon!
