2006 Villa Creek Avenger - USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles (9/29/2009)
Screw capped. Purple in color, some ruby at the rim. Mostly opaque and bright. The nose has a ton of cedar, fresh cut oak, alcohol, and some black raspberries. Full bodied. On the palate, this is disappointing. There is so much searing oak and alcohol, it is hard to enjoy the fruit underneath. The fruit is lush with sweet black raspberries and some pepper. Air helps the alcohol but not the oak. A glass left for day 2 is the same. Certainly not a bad wine, but an over use of oak for my tastes. 50+4+11+16+6=87 (87 pts.) -
2007 Domaine Le Vieux Lavoir Côtes du Rhône - France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Côtes du Rhône (9/29/2009)
$10 Ohio. I had never heard of the producer but took a chance based on the vintage. Ruby in color, clear and bright. The nose is warm cherry pie with a sugared topping. Really a pleasant scent if not totally what I like in a wine. Medium bodied. 13.5%. On the palate, this starts of tart cherries, some pie filling and also some rootbeer/cherry mix of a soda. Nice acidity. I would not hold this wine mroe than a year but for the money, a decent wine. 50+3+12+15+6=86 (86 pts.)
