TN: Vietti Recent Releases

VIETTI RECENT RELEASES - Alta Restaurant & Wine Bar, Lenox, MA (2/26/2026)

Spirited Wine Store in Lenox, MA, the Vietti Winery, and Dalla Terra Winery Direct sponsored this dinner with a broad selection of Vietti recent releases. The tasting was led by Urs Vetter, the export sales director of the Vietti Winery. He was quite informative about the history of the winery and the techniques used in making these wines.

The food provided by Alta Restaurant & Wine Bar was superb and well-matched to the wines.

The Barolos were doubled-decanted around 5:30pm. The others were pop and pour. Dinner started at 6pm and ended around 8:30.

Photos and more details can be found on my website.

Flight 1: Two Whites

Duck liver mousse and pickled beet on toasted baguette.
Yummy!

  • 2024 Vietti Roero Arneis - Italy, Piedmont, Alba, Roero
Crisp nose of lemon and slate. Crisp citrus in the mouth. Pleasant. (88 points)
  • 2023 Vietti Timorasso Colli Tortonesi Derthona - Italy, Piedmont, Colli Tortonesi
Expansive floral nose with a bit of citrus. Thick and rich in the mouth. Long, rich, and complex. A serious white wine. Fermented in ceramic vats with no malo. 93-?? (93 points)

Flight 2: Barbera and Nebbiolo

Roasted Parsnips, herb coulis, shaved Parmesan, and Parmesan cream.
This was a truly original dish. Delicious.

  • 2022 Vietti Barbera d'Asti La Crena - Italy, Piedmont, Asti, Barbera d'Asti
Powerful nose of thick black fruit. Thick and delicious. Soft with low acidity. A delicious Barbera to over the next 10 years. Impressive. (93 points)
  • 2022 Vietti Langhe Nebbiolo Perbacco - Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Langhe DOC
Lovely nose of bright red fruit. Smooth up front, but finishes with more harsh tannins than are typical of this wine. Judgement reserved.
  • 2021 Vietti Barolo - Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
[Note: This is the first vintage where they were no longer able to use the name "Castiglione" for this wine.] Gorgeous nose of red fruit and spice. Lots of red fruit in the mouth with soft tannins. A delicious wine to drink now or over the the next 15 or so years. An outstanding Barolo Classico. (93 points)

Flight 3: Three 2021 Cru Barolo

Slow cooked pork with red wine braising jus, sweet potato purée, and roasted root vegetables.
This was delicious and a great match to these Barolos.

  • 2021 Vietti Barolo Brunate - Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Muted black fruit nose. Rich and restrained. Long and complex. I would put this in the back of the cellar for at least a decade. A powerful wine. 95-?? (95 points)
  • 2021 Vietti Barolo Cerequio - Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Rich, red fruit nose with some roses and licorice. Rich, expansive, and elegant red fruit on a super long finish. Wow! My WOTN. (97 points)
  • 2021 Vietti Barolo Lazzarito - Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Bright red and black fruit nose with a hint of mint. Rich and intense flavors of black fruit and a bit of chocolate. Another stunningly long and complex wine! (96 points)

A lovely and informative evening tasting some great wines. 2021 is definitely a great vintage in Barolo.

Any change in style since the Vietti and Currado families are no longer involved? i’ll admit not trying them since maybe the '11 vintage. Just curious if there was a change in style.

No. None.

Great! Thanks for the wonderful notes. Sounds like I need to seek these out again.

Just tasted the 2021 Monvigliero tonight. A whole cluster nose with a lot of ripe strawberry pouring out. Mid-weight in the glass with a lot of candied cherry and a large amount of fine tannin (what one would expect for a young Barolo). Was very good.

Thanks, same question was on my mind. Haven’t really purchased since '17 vintage as have a good supply, but always like the wines a lot when they get opened.

The ‘21 Monvigliero is my favorite from the ‘21 range, followed closely by the Ravera.

Great notes! Surprised to read that the Cerequio was showing so well, I had it at a tasting towards the end of 2025 and it was extremely tight. Was hard to get a read on it.

For what it’s worth, the cellarmaster Eugenio Palumbo was in his role well before the sale of Vietti and Luca/Elena were still around for the harvest and vinification of the 21 Barolo, so there aren’t really going to be any changes in new release Barolo yet.

Didn’t they leave in 2022?

I had to google for the specifics, but they sold in 16 and resigned from the winery in Jan 23

Are the Monvigliero, Brunate and Cerequio bottlings all new since 2016, or were they making some of those before the sale?

I don’t recall them offering a Timorasso historically.

I know it was part Kraus’s plan to expand the portfolio and buy more vineyards, but I’m curiously if any of these additions were made under the Currados.

Vietti Brunate has been around for along time - the 04 was fantastic a few years back.

The Currados we’re still there when Krause bought those two except the Brunate.

Vietti’s Monvigliero was first released for the 2018 vintage. I remember seeing it offered somewhere and thinking it odd, then looking it up. This story says it is a metayage agreement involving, allegedly, Jay-Z.
