TN: Under the Stars at Moonrise Izakaya on the Upper West Side

Quick notes from Dinner under the Stars at Moonrise Izakaya on the Upper West Side…

2002 Donnhoff Norheimer Dellchen Riesling Spatlese: Nice petrol & sweet citrus on the nose…moderately sweet, some beeswax and pears, nicely evolved, overall very nice, but not the powerhouse I would expect from Donnhoff.

2014 V. Dauvissat Chablis: Just another great Chablis from the ‘14 vintage. You can throw a rock in any direction in Chablis that year and everybody made great juice. Pale yellow, citrusy nose with lemony/peachy flavors framed with saline and minerals. Lovely stuff.

2015 Enderle & Moll ‘Pinot a Trois’: The blend of the three E&M single vineyards, this is coming along quite nicely. Decanted for a couple of hours, the nose is earthy ripe cherry fruit and herbs, palate shows a nice acidic backbone and full red cherry flavor. Softly tannic, long finish. Really serious juice!

2007 Livio Sassetti Pertimali Brunello: Powerful wine here! Darkest garnet red color, strong Sangio nose of black fruits, herbs and cedar. Surprisingly concentrated for 13 years old…but tannins are nicely evolved. Wonderful, mouth-filling and structured, with jammy fruit that coats your tongue. Beautiful stuff!

I’m only a few blocks away! What’s the corkage policy at Moonrise?

We didn’t pay a thing, but I think that may have been cuz Asher knew the owner…but he’s a pretty good dude and I can’t imagine he would charge a lot. Give them a call. Well worth it.
